Healthcare diagnoses, procedures, services, equipment… basically everything that goes into patient care must be coded and entered into our system. Training those to ensure diagnoses and procedures are accurately recorded is a big part of the job. The other part? Being able to follow state and federal compliance regulations. It’s no small task. WHAT YOU WILL DO
Develop and maintain a consistent coding operations orientation program and reports the coders' progress to Coding Leadership throughout the orientation and training processes.
Prepare education material based on audit results and reviews material with the coding staff impacted.
Assist corporate coding leadership with training and/or development of a performance improvement track for coding employees in the disciplinary process related to quality or productivity performance.
Assist with Coding Supervisor with reviewing and responding to external coding audits.
Act as a subject matter expert regarding payer reimbursement methodologies and official coding guidelines.
Monitor changes to coding methodologies, official coding guidelines, regulatory standards, reimbursement schemes.
Orient new physicians with regards to the coding department's role in the revenue cycle and prepare training material for coding related to physician education.
Maintain EPIC CT trainer status for Coding/HIM.
WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED
Prior coding experience relevant to the educator specialty with RHIT/RHIA.
Prior coding manager or trainer/auditor experience.
Knowledge of types of health information and the rules and regulations surrounding their use.
Advanced understanding of ICD10CM coding, ICD10PCS and coding guidelines.
Knowledge of laws, regulations, or policies impacting the Healthcare industry and understanding of Managed Care requirements under the Medicare/Medicaid and other third party payor programs.
Understanding of common medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
Conceptualize and plan.
Teach others new skills.
Quality improvement processes.
Spreadsheet development and management.
Facilitate and lead meetings.
Effectively communicate verbally and in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
