- Support Salary Scale Grade S10: $24.48 per hour; starting
- Instruct new drivers in all aspects of the school vehicle.
- Explain and demonstrate standard driving skills and safe driving practices.
- Train drivers in safety procedures related to the transportation of school children, including the proper use of safety devices, procedures for approaching stops, procedures for loading and unloading, and the use of emergency equipment.
- Ride with drivers on regular runs to observe their operation and driving techniques, and gives any advice or criticism at the end of the run. Evaluate on-the-road driving performance.
- Train veteran drivers in new assignments and in the use of new equipment.
- Report problems related to equipment, schedules, and conditions which face the driver.
- Maintain training records, and evaluate drivers at the end of the training period.
- Plan, organize, and record work in an orderly manner.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in driving various types of school buses.
- Successful completion of the Maryland Department of Education Driver Instructor Workshop for classroom and behind-the-wheel training or able to complete within ninety (90) days of employment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the operation and mechanical functioning of school buses.
- Demonstrated knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the operation of school buses.
- Successful completion of any tests which may be required of drivers.
- Ability to pass the Maryland School Bus Driver’s Physical examination.
- Compliance with all federal, state, and local school bus driver requirements.
- Possession of a Maryland “CDL” for school vehicles.
- Possession of an acceptable Motor Vehicle Administration record.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under stress.
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience providing staff development in small and large group settings.
- Experience evaluating personnel based on performance objectives.
- Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.

Salary
Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System.
Role
The Bus Driver Trainer performs instructional tasks related to the training and retraining of bus drivers. This employee also performs other duties necessary to the efficient operation of the Transportation Department as assigned.
