POSITION TITLE: Bilingual Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of English Language Learners
DEPARTMENT: Federal Programs
LOCATION: All K-12 Schools
POSITION GOAL: Assist the content area teachers and to provided support to English Learners (ELs) in the classroom.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Know, follow, and enforce school code of conduct
- Become familiar with content being taught
- Keep students on task- some examples include:
- Students are on the correct page number
- Students are copying notes
- Students are listening and following directions
- Students are logging in/out of computers
- Present examples of problems without giving answers.
- Follow content area teacher’s rules and expectations
- Assist ELs in following directions on assignments and assessments
- Guide and facilitate activities within the classroom.
- Collaborate with content area teachers
- Perform tasks as assigned by the content area teachers and provide assistance to teachers as necessary
- Communicate effectively in English and in selected native language
- Relate well to students and control their behavior if necessary.
- Maintain a procedure manual for this position, review annually, and submit any revisions to supervisor at time of evaluation.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.
- Associate degree, 48 post high school credits or completion of certified online paraprofessional training.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Familiar with Outlook and internet navigation.
- Current Act 24 (82), Act 34, Act 114, Act 151, Act 168 clearances and pre-employment drug testing and physical with TB test required.
- The person, while performing in this position, will be required to:
- Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and to talk and hear;
- Sit, and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch;
- Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision and the ability to adjust focus;
- Subject to inside office environmental conditions with moderate noise level;
- Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds (based on position);
- Possess effective communication, judgment, mathematical, planning and human relations skills, and to meet deadlines with severe time constraints
- Ability to demonstrate diplomacy when dealing with community members, parents, teachers, staff and external contacts, and to maintain confidentiality.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 10 months per year; 7 hours per day (full time); <7 hours per day (part time), unless grandfathered.
- Salary and benefits according to the agreement between the Board of School Directors and the Hazleton Area Education Support Professional Association.
