Upper School STEAM/Computer Science Teacher


Employment Opportunity: The Friends School of Baltimore is currently seeking an Upper School STEAM/Computer Science Teacher to begin mid-August 2024. This individual would teach multiple courses in the Computer Science department, including Robotics and Physical Computing. Experience with STEAM, interdisciplinary programs, and project/inquiry-based learning is preferred. Additionally, candidates who have experience collaborating with colleagues, teaching in a block schedule, and using a diversity of assessment techniques are especially suited for this role. All Upper School teachers participate in the full program of an independent school in addition to their classroom responsibilities.


Status: Full-time non-exempt during the academic year (mid-August through mid-June)

Hours:

Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Honor the Quaker values and the Teaching and Learning Paradigm of Friends School.
  • Collaborate with teachers in the CS Department, within the division, and cross-divisionally.
  • Manage lab and shop materials for multiple classes in a shared teaching space.
  • Advise a small group of students as they progress through the co-curricular or extracurricular life of the school including clubs, coaching, special event planning, field trips, seminars, etc.
  • Attend All-School Professional Days, Department meetings, and Upper School faculty meetings.
  • Complete timely, detailed, and prescriptive progress reports, grades, and comments at regular intervals during the year for each student taught.
  • Help move the initiatives of the School forward by serving on committees and lending expertise and voice.
  • Support school-wide and divisional initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: The preferred candidate for this position will have teaching experience and a passion for working with Upper School students and faculty. Bachelor's degree required.


The ideal candidate will be:


  • Experienced in STEAM and willing to learn new skills quickly
  • Comfortable working with modern coding languages. Friends curriculum is language agnostic but currently teaches classes in Java, C , Python, HTML, CSS, and P5.js
  • Open to working with department members to develop new and existing curriculum
  • Flexible and willing to collaborate
  • Responsive and possess good communication skills
  • Organized and detail-oriented
