The Recreation Specialist provides assistance in the coordination and administration of the County-wide parks and recreation system including the activities of acquisition and development of new park facilities, maintenance, and enhancement of existing facilities, and creation of recreation programs for County residents through the establishment of volunteer councils. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for aiding in the long and short-term planning relating to all phases of parks and recreation development and programming for the enhancement of quality of life for Gadsden County residents. Additionally, the Recreation Specialist is responsible for maintaining, preserving and protecting Pat Thomas Park at Hopkins Landing and rendering public relations services. These examples are not to be construed as being all conclusive of the management and assignment of specific duties that may be logical and prudent to the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Evaluates the effectiveness of recreation areas, facilities, and services. Studies local conditions and develops immediate and long-range plans to meet recreation needs. Interprets recreation program to public and maintains cooperative planning and working relationships with allied public and voluntary agencies. Coordinates with other
County, City, State, and Federal agencies to maximize program delivery through shared resources and complementary programs and services. Assists the Director of Operations in preparing grant requests for submission to state and federal agencies for developing, acquiring, and/or enhancing parks and recreation services. Researches grant funding opportunities and identifies sources of funding. Assists with monitoring maintenance schedules and assignments for park facility maintenance and enhancement. Resolves citizen complaints and accepts suggestions regarding recreation programs at County facilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Knowledge of community needs, level of service, and space requirements for the development of recreation programs and facilities. Ability to work with a wide-ranging variation of people, including politicians, government officials, coaches, parents, and concerned citizens. Ability to conduct routine inspections, and identify and investigate problems. Ability to communicate effectively. To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the ability to operate a personal computer and working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Recreation Administration, or Public
Administration with two (2) years of related experience in the Parks and Recreation field; or a combination of training and relevant work-related experience may substitute for the required degree.
