What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Coroner position at Gallatin County?
Under general supervision, the deputy coroner will inquire into any death that requires a coroner response in Gallatin County as required by Montana Code Annotated (MCA).
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the deputy coroner shall be the same as the coroner when on duty. These include, but are not limited to:
- Inquiring into the cause, manner, and circumstances of deaths:
- Not attended by a physician,
- Deaths that occur in the hospital less than 24 hours after admittance,
- Any non-natural death,
- Juvenile or infantile deaths,
- Or when requested by a physician.
- Performing death notifications to next of kin.
- Preparing and filing reports with the County Attorney and Montana State Crime Lab.
- Performing external examinations of deceased individuals.
- Collecting blood, vitreous and urine samples for testing.
- Establishing the identity of deceased persons.
Hazardous Work: On occasion, the deputy coroner may be required to be present in remote areas for investigating purposes. Transportation to these areas will be arranged by the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy coroners may be exposed to disease or other potentially dangerous substances.
Applicants must be a legal resident of Gallatin County and be able to assume the duties and responsibilities of the coroner. They must be a high school graduate or holder of an equivalent certificate. Must have the ability to lift 50lbs. Must possess a valid MT Driver’s License. Must pass a pre-employment background check.
Previous experience, including but not limited to, death investigation, knowledge of human anatomy, pathophysiology, and medical terminology is preferred, but not required. Deputy coroners are required to attend a Montana POST (Public Safety Officer Standards and Training) certified 40-hour coroner basic course within the first year of employment. Additionally, deputy coroners must attend 16 hours of continuing coroner education every two years.

Salary: $100/24 hour on-call period
Work Hours: 24 hour on-call shifts, includes nights and weekends.
