What are the responsibilities and job description for the GI Tech position at Gastromed, LLC?

DEFINITION OF POSITION:

Provides individualized and specialized care to patients in the Endoscopy Center in accordance with the Center's policies and procedures. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics. Demonstrates initiative, insight and judgment in the decision-making process.

CLINICAL FUNCTIONS (If only working in specific unit area ✓ N/A to other unit areas)

Room Preparation   

1        Prepares room and equipment based on patient needs

2        Implements housecleaning tasks necessary for sanitation

3       Acquires supplies and equipment needed for procedure

4      Test equipment function and reports any malfunction

5    After the procedure, cleans room and restocks supplies as appropriate for the next procedure or end of the day


Processing of Instruments and Equipment

1    Demonstrates ability to clean and organize equipment

2    Demonstrates ability to package supplies for sterilization

3    Demonstrates correct use of washing and sterilizing equipment

4    Selects proper mode of sterilization for instruments and equipment

5    Demonstrates knowledge of chemical sterilization/disinfection

6    Chooses appropriate items for disinfection

7    Chooses appropriate agent(s) for disinfection

8    Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique

9    Handles tissue specimens correctly and accurately

10    Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of scope functions and equipment utilized during procedure

11    Demonstrates appropriate decontamination of equipment after use

12    Implements housecleaning task necessary for sanitation

 

Infection Control

1    Wears appropriate attire according to facility policy

2    Follows universal precautions

3    Uses gowns and gloves according to policy

4    Practices recognized principles of cleanliness and sanitation


Safety Precautions

1    Provides for patient safety throughout the perioperative experience

2    Operates mechanical and electrical equipment correctly

3    Escorts or transports patient safely

4    Administers medications correctly and accurately

5    Provides for the safety of oneself and other members of the team

     a.    Correctly disposes of sharps

     b.    Correctly handles hazardous and contaminated materials

     c.    Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety

     d.    Demonstrates knowledge of the facility disaster plan


Leadership Functions

1    Participates as a team member

2    Participates in Performance Improvement Activities

3    Practices unfamiliar skills

4    Uses proper resource personnel

5    Demonstrates cost-effectiveness by using supplies appropriately and replacing used supplies in a timely manner

6    Enters appropriate documentation in the medical record


Planning: Assists in a Plan of Care to Achieve Patient Goals

1    Coordinates use of supplies and equipment for patient care

2    Controls environment

3    Prepares for potential emergencies

4    Provides patient care appropriate to age specific needs


Implementation: Assists Nursing Actions in transferring the Patient According to Prescribed Plan

1    Determines appropriate and safe method according to need

2    Provides for emotional needs during transfer

3    Communicates/ documents transfer


Provides Equipment and Supplies Based on Patient Needs

1    Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies

2    Assures all equipment is functioning before use

3    Operates equipment according to manufacturers' instructions

4    Removes malfunctioning equipment from use

5    Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times

6    Uses supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner

7    Communicates/ documents provision of equipment and supplies


Psychologically Monitors the Patient

1    Assists/ monitors physical symptoms

2    Assists/ monitors behavioral changes

3    Operates monitor equipment according to manufacturer 's instruction

4    Communicates/ documents physiological responses


Monitors and Controls the Environment

1    Regulates temperature and humidity as indicated

2    Adheres to electrical safety policies and procedures

3    Monitors sensory environment

4    Maintains traffic patterns

5    Adheres to sanitation policies and procedures

6    Communicates/ documents environmental controls


Respects Patient's Rights

1    Demonstrates awareness of the individual rights of the patient

2    Provides for privacy through maintaining confidentiality

3    Provides for privacy through physical protection

4    Communicates/ documents provisions for patient's rights


Performs Actions that Demonstrate Accountability

1    Exercises safe judgment in decision making

2    Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to changing nursing practice

3    Responds in a positive manner to constructive criticism

4    Demonstrates tact and understanding when dealing with patients, team members, members of other disciplines, and the public

s    Practices within ethical and legal guidelines

7    Communicates/ documents actions

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

    High school graduate with one or more years of related work experience in GI endoscopy.

    Able to read, write and communicate.

    Displays a primary interest in giving good patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers.

    Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality and integrity policy on all matters.

    Membership of GI specialty society encouraged.

    Maintains Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work involves prolonged periods of standing, sitting, lifting, bending, reaching and the ability to push or pull items weighing SO pounds or less.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The Center is open Monday through Friday and provides preoperative beds, procedure rooms, and post procedure beds. In the working environment of the Center, there may be potential exposure to communicable diseases, contaminated blood and body fluids, and hazardous materials.
