Teacher Aide, School Aide, Cafeteria Monitor/Hall Monitor, Cleaner, Food Service Worker, Bus Driver, Secretary, Security Worker, or Micro-Computer Maintenance Technician

Food Service Worker:Part-time 10-month (works student calendar) hours vary dependent on assignment

Bus Driver:Full-time 10-month (works student calendar) minimum 5 hours/day (dependent on route assignment)

Security Worker: Full-time 10-month (works student calendar) 6.5 hours/day

Micro-Computer Maintenance Technician:
Full-time 12-month 8 hours/daySecretary: Full-time 12-month 7.5 - 8 hours/day

Job Descriptions:

  • Please note that all positions are regulated through the Monroe County Department of Civil Service and therefore must meet any requirements set by this agency.

Essential Job Functions

Teacher Aide/School Aide & Cafeteria/Hall Monitor:

  • Assists students with academic assignments;
  • Assists students with their project research, encyclopedia skills, card catalogue skills, computer skills, etc.;
  • Corrects papers;
  • Performs simple and routine clerical duties such as copying or duplicating, filing and compiling attendance sheets;
  • Maintains inventory of and schedules repairs for classroom equipment (such as film strips, cassettes);
  • Proctors examinations;
  • Assists handicapped students with their daily activities with regard to mobility;
  • May assist with toileting, eating and basic care needs of students.

Additional Duties:

  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Profile

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; plus, EITHER:

  • One (1) year full-time or its part-time paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR,
  • One (1) year full time or its part-time paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR,
  • Possession of a certificate of completion of a course of Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency; OR,
  • A combination of experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.

Note: Successful completion of one (1) year of college education beyond high school (minimum of 30 semester college credit hours) may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience.

Bus Driver:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Drives a school bus/vehicle on a regular schedule on an assigned route or on special occasions;
  • Performs a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle prior to departure and post-trip inspection after every route;
  • Reports all defects, mechanical and other, of the bus/vehicle to the supervisor;
  • Instructs or informs passengers about safety practices and procedures when embarking and disembarking bus/vehicle, while in transit, and throughout the year;
  • Maintains safe and orderly conduct on the bus/vehicle, including student management;
  • Assists passengers in boarding and exiting a bus/vehicle by providing physical assistance or operating a hydraulic lift;
  • Cleans and fuels assigned vehicles daily;
  • Operates a van, station wagon, or similar vehicle to transport objects.

Travel Requirements

Travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required for certain positions.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

Good knowledge of vehicle and traffic law, regulations of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, and regulations of the Commissioner of Education (New York State Education Part 156.3 Transportation Regulations) pertaining to pupil transportation; good knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving; good knowledge of the geography of the employing school district or municipality; ability to operate a bus under all driving and road conditions; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to physically assist passengers on and off buses; ability to get along well with children/students/passengers and command their respect; mental alertness; visual and audio acuity; dependability; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Food Service Worker:

Essential Job Functions

  • Prepares ingredients for salads, sandwiches, and cold plates.
  • Portions and garnishes all desserts, salads, and fruits for serving.
  • Trims, washes and prepares vegetables.
  • Sets up serving lines with condiments, hot and cold foods, and table services.
  • Serves food from steam table or food line in cafeteria-style operation.
  • Washes and sanitizes all pots, pans, and utensils.
  • Cleans and dries silver, china, and glassware.
  • Fills sugar bowls, salt and pepper shakers, and napkin holders, and holders for utensils and straws.
  • Cleans dining tables of dirty dishes and trays in the absence of lunchroom aides.
  • Washes and sanitizes dining room tables, chairs, and trays in the absence of lunchroom aides.
  • Operates kitchen appliances and equipment.
  • Advises students of well-balanced meals.
  • Cleans kitchen and dining room area.
  • Serves as cashier on student faculty food service line.

Cleaner:

Essential Functions:

  • Sweeps, dust mops and may polish floors, hallways, stairwells, and entranceways.
  • Dusts, polishes, and cleans office and school furniture, electrical fixtures, woodwork, stair railings, radiators, and venetian blinds.
  • Washes marks, stains, and fingerprints from walls, tables, chairs, desks, cupboards, counters and glass.
  • Cleans lavatory facilities including fixtures, toilets, and floors.
  • Vacuums carpets and upholstered furniture and removes minor stains.
  • Empties ashtrays, wastebaskets, and pencil sharpeners into large trash containers.
  • Fills dispensers with disposable paper products.
  • Secures and locks windows and office classroom doors.
  • Turns off lights and unplugs small electrical appliances.
  • Straightens and arranges office, classroom and cafeteria furniture.
  • Washes chalkboards and chalktrays.
  • Washes windows and mirrors.

Additional Duties:

  • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Security Worker:

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with overall safety/security surveillances;
  • Conducts periodic rounds, making sure all windows, doors and entrances to the building are closed and locked;
  • Monitors and attempts to prevent disruptive behavior in schools or County owned or leased facilities in accordance with agency policies and procedures;
  • Prevents admittance to the premises of unauthorized persons;
  • Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances;
  • Prevents damage to property;
  • Assists local fire department with fire alarms and bomb scares;
  • Monitors vehicle and personnel movement on school or County property;
  • Opens all doors on schedule allowing public to enter;
  • Writes simple activity reports concerning such incidents as vandalism, theft, or other disruptive activity;
  • Checks valves, boiler pressure and water level to see that they are in operating order.

  • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.

Qualifications Profile:

Minimum qualifications: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma. Experience as a security guard or security officer may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Special Requirements:

Current registration as a Security Guard with the New York State Department of State is required.

Depending upon assignment, a physical examination may be required.

If you are appointed, you will be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.

  • or be hired as a Provisional Appointment. The qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until an appropriate eligible list can be established and a permanent appointment made.

Micro-Computer Maintenance Technician:

Essential Functions:

  • Analyzes and verifies microcomputer and/or peripheral equipment malfunction using diagnostics and other repair procedures;
  • Repairs malfunctions to the component level and verifies proper operation;
  • Tests, cleans and aligns disk drives, printers and other microcomputer electrical and mechanical assemblies;
  • Uses electronic test equipment such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters;
  • Tests and repairs various types of microcomputer modems and other telephone connecting equipment used with microcomputers;
  • Sets up and demonstrates microcomputer equipment as required;
  • Maintains records on microcomputer equipment parts inventory and repairs made.

Qualifications Profile:

Education:

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Electronic Technology, Microcomputer repair, or related field with a minimum of 9 credit hours in digital electronics, OR;
  • Two (2) years of paid fulltime or its parttime equivalent experience in maintenance and repair of microcomputers and related equipment, OR;
  • Successful completion of a recognized course in microcomputer repair such as training courses offered by the military, microcomputer hardware vendors or consultants, or any other training course providing "hands on" micro computer repair experience, plus one (1) year of experience as described in (B) above.

Secretary:

Essential Functions:

  • Prepares, formats and maintains material such as correspondence and statistical or narrative reports from either a handwritten copy or dictating machine, outline or other detailed instructions;
  • Prepares and maintains alphabetical, numerical or personal files;
  • Sorts, distributes and files materials in a manual or text management filing system;
  • Obtains and gives out information by telephone, correspondence or in person;
  • Performs complex electronic searches for information in documents, records and files;
  • Compiles, prepares, and inputs a variety of data;
  • Analyzes and checks for completeness and accuracy, a variety of complex financial and statistical records and reports;
  • Enters and extracts data and information from a data base;
  • Enters information onto standard forms such as payroll or production records, authorizations, certifications, etc.;
  • Purchases office supplies and monitors expenditures;
