Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center, located in Los Angeles, is a non-profit organization that provides an array of comprehensive mental health services for Children, Adolescents, Transitional Aged Youth, and Adults suffering from mental illness in the Greater Los Angeles area. The organization consists of a standalone fifty-five (55) )-bed hospital and six outlying outpatient facilities that have anywhere from fourteen (14) beds to one hundred and thirty-four (134) beds. The organization has approximately four hundred (400) employees.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Director of Development directs and manages the identification, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of major individual, corporate, foundation and annual giving prospects in support of Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center’s fundraising priorities as a fully integrated member of Gateways’ development team.
The ideal candidate will have robust experience working in a donor-centric environment within health care, preferably behavioral health care. In partnership with the Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Foundation board and president, the Director of Development, will create and implement a comprehensive philanthropic plan to productively cultivate relationships with and compel investment in the mission and work of Gateways from political members, community friends, business and civic leaders. The Director coordinates efforts in all areas that support major gift fundraising and is expected to personally solicit and close major gifts of $50,000 or more in support of funding priorities.
ESSENTIALS DUTIES
- Design and implement a comprehensive development plan to increase philanthropic support for funding priorities established by the Foundation President. Focus on strategically engaging, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts of $50,000 or more and stewarding donors. Identify and qualify new prospects, capable of making gifts of $50,000 or more. Build, develop and manage a portfolio of 100-125 major gift prospects, with a goal of having 30-40 prospects in the solicitation phase of the donor cycle annually. Complete at least 175 meaningful engagements and present 20 proposals per year, with an expectation of escalating philanthropic goals.
- Advise the Foundation President on all matters related to Gateways Hospital’s development activities. Foster a culture of philanthropy within Gateways Hospital, and advise, assist and provide training for the Foundation’s leadership, the hospital’s administration and staff regarding development initiatives.
- Develop effective fundraising strategies in coordination and collaboration with other members of the development team, including the local Grant Writer and our Lobbyist in Washington DC. Coordinate strategies for major gift solicitations, annual giving campaigns, employee campaigns and special events. Actively involve the Foundation President, the hospital’s executive team, department heads, staff, and other stakeholders in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation process as appropriate.
- Recruit and train volunteers for the annual Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center’s Golf Classic, actively involving them in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process for sponsors.
- In cooperation with the Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Foundation’s leadership and with input from the Foundation’s President, establish annual qualitative and quantitative goals, objectives and key accountabilities in order to increase donors and dollars raised for Gateways Hospital. Determine the most effective means to report progress and provide assessment on a regular basis. Prepare and deliver annual written philanthropic plans.
- Continuation of professional development and working knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet Gateways Hospital’s priorities.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues across multiple areas to bring solicitations to successful completion.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.
- Highly developed organizational and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated computer competency in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
Qualifications
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATES
Minimum Education Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
Desired Education:
- Certified Fund Raising Executive preferred.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum five to seven years’ experience in development.
- Possess a track record that demonstrates solid fundraising results and success soliciting and closing major gifts.
- Experience should be in progressively responsible positions.
- Experience working with Raiser’s Edge NXT or other comparable fundraising systems.
- Demonstrated successful experience working with clinical and therapy staff, unit leaders and boards comprised of prominent corporate and community volunteers.
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple projects and personally ask and close gifts.
- Willingness to travel and work occasional weekend/evening hours.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate the vision, values and mission of Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center, align donor intent with hospital priorities.
- Comfort working effectively with high-level donor prospects.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and Community Care Licensing (CCL) background clearance.
- Valid California Driver’s license.
- TB clearance.
- Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways insurance carrier.
- Fire and Safety Training*.
- Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI)**
* Note: If indicated certifications/licenses are lacking, they must be obtained within 180 days of hire.
**Training needs to be completed within 30 days from the date of hire on a designated date provided by onboarding. Staff need to be certified at the commensurate level for their role to perform their job duties (staff will be taken off the schedule if certification is not achieved).

Salary : $115,000 - $140,000
