Job Summary

Provide advanced electrical engineering services in support of either the operation and maintenance of the campus electrical distribution system or the design, construction and operation of electrical equipment, components or systems associated with research efforts within an academic or research unit. Provide work and project direction to other engineers and technical personnel. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: facilities management and utilities personnel or research management and faculty; co-workers, vendors, suppliers and contractors. This position typically will advise and counsel: management, engineering and technical personnel. This position will supervise: NA.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Lead in the design, installation and testing of electrical/electronic components

Job Duty 9 -
Conduct project reviews for conformance to quality standards and compliance

Job Duty 10 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Job Duty 2 -
Develop engineering project schedules and make work assignments

Job Duty 3 -
Conduct analyses of electrical/electronic system performance

Job Duty 4 -
Develop plans and specifications for electrical systems

Job Duty 5 -
Troubleshoot electrical systems; may involve oversight of calibration and repair work

Job Duty 6 -
Prepare drawings, schematics diagrams and related documentation associated with electrical components and systems

Job Duty 7 -
Manage project engineering budgets

Job Duty 8 -
Interact with vendors regarding procurement and delivery issues

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
Four to five years of job related experience

Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE)

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Electrical Engineer II position in the Photonics & Microelectronics Division (PMD) will have experience ensuring the division laboratory environments operate to their fullest potential and optimum efficiency by maintaining accountability of laboratory equipment, ensuring laboratory supplies are well stocked, and confirming laboratory equipment is both operational and in calibration.

In addition, the Electrical Engineer II would have experience aiding in sponsored project work such as assembling various hardware components and system fabrication for various optical systems, designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), soldering components/assemblies, preparing and fabricating wiring and cabling assemblies, performing simple machining operations such as drilling, tapping, cutting, etc.

Skills in inventory management
IPC Endorsements such as J-STD-001, IPC-A-600, IPC-A-610, IPC/WHMA-A-620, IPC-7711, and IPC-7721.
Experience with hardware design and layout using EAGLE, Cadence, KiCad, Altium, etc.
Experience with active and/or passive electro-optical components
Experience with electronic test equipment, connectors, and wiring harnesses
Experience with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly, test, and debug
Experience in mechanical fabrication

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires advanced professional level knowledge and skills in the application of electrical engineering principles, processes and practices. Skills in application of regulations, codes and safety practices associated with electrical systems, communications and project leadership/management is required as is the use of office and engineering/technical related computer applications, databases and systems.
