What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Aid Counselor position at Georgian Court University?
The Financial Aid Counselor’s duties include counseling and advising students and parents on the various financial aid programs, assisting with the administration of one or more federal, state, or institutional programs, evaluating Financial Aid applications to determine student eligibility for various financial aid programs, and collecting data and keeping accurate records.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for awarding and verification of undergraduate students. Determines student’s eligibility for the various financial aid programs evaluating their application data in compliance with federal, state, and institutional criteria.
- Assists students in the application process for financial aid by helping them to complete appropriate and required forms; by advising them of their rights and responsibilities concerning financial aid: and by providing them with information about the status of their financial aid applications.
- Ensures student and parent awareness of the various financial aid resources during counseling sessions by providing information to them and answering their questions regarding financial aid resources.
- Assists with the smooth operation of the department by assisting in the administration of one or more financial aid programs managed by the office.
- Represents the Financial Aid Office at on campus events, programs and virtual appointments with students and families. Responds to general office emails and phone calls as needed.
- Participates in annual training through FSA training and professional organizations to keep abreast of new information and program changes to be implemented.
Qualifications:
- 2-3 years financial aid experience.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate sensitive and/or complex information in a confidential and straightforward manner.
- Must be a creative problem solver.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize multiple complex projects and tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated service aptitude and ability to work independently as well as with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Must possess a high level of accuracy, self-motivation, and strong attention to detail.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office and experienced in financial database systems Powerfaids preferred, NJ FAMS, Open Net and Elm Select.
- Familiarity with academic environment, policies, and procedures.
