What are the responsibilities and job description for the Confirmation Teacher position at Germantown Jewish Centre?
3 hrs/ week (Teaching 6:30-8:30 pm on Tuesday Evenings prep and communications)
Salary range: $3000 - $3300 for September - May (with a few prep hours in August)
Germantown Jewish Centre (GJC) is seeking an energetic, creative, Jewish teen educator to teach the 10th grade Confirmation Class as part of our vibrant and innovative team of Teen Tuesday teachers for the 2025-26 | 5786 school year.
The Confirmation teacher will partner with GJC’s senior Rabbi and Education Director to teach the Confirmation class, entitled, “A 360 Degree Look at Religion and Ourselves.” This is an experiential program that matches our teens’ developmental assertion of their individual expressions of Judaism with a comparative study of world religions. The primary activity of the class is an exploration of Philadelphia’s religious diversity through in-person visits to a variety of Jewish, Christian, Muslim and non-Abrahamic houses of worship throughout the area on Tuesday nights. Visits to the houses of worship generally include a tour of the physical space and a conversation with faith leaders about their beliefs and practices. When possible, we try to arrange for teenage representatives from the community to participate in the meeting and connect with our teens around these issues. The Confirmation Teacher accompanies the students on all visits and helps them prepare for and process what they learn. They also communicate regularly with teens and parents to coordinate transportation to and from each visit.
The program culminates with the Confirmation service on May 16, 2026 in which students help lead the service and share what they’ve learned over the year and how it impacted their own Jewish identities. The Confirmation teacher plays a key role in planning and executing this ceremony as well.
GJC teachers are excited Jewish knowledge-seekers, youth-cheerleaders and community builders. They work to connect students to each other and to our rich and diverse Jewish heritage in a warm and curious educational environment. Teachers will receive direct support from the Education Director to work with students to get the most possible from this unique experience.
Experienced and first-time teachers are encouraged to apply.
