DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Early Intervention Specialist is responsible for performing a variety of instructional tasks in order to guide individualized development of special needs children and their families with appropriate assistance in at-home instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of personally identifiable information to ensure procedural safeguard and adherence to the Privacy Act.
  • Design and implement learning activities to carry out Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP) in the home.
  • Recognize developmental delays and make proper referrals according to department policies and procedures, and implement follow-up activities.
  • Conduct screening, observation and records results; guide individualized development of assigned children by evaluating individual child’s needs to develop appropriate objectives; and materials to meet individual needs (i.e. physical/motor development, speech/language, pre-verbal/verbal response patterns, self-help skills, adaptive behaviors, and pre-academic skills); and evaluating and documenting individual progress toward stated objectives.
  • Ensure parents receive clear and understandable information about their child’s special needs.
  • Inform parents of the referral process, obtain written parental permissions for evaluation and provide copies of signed forms for parents and office files.
  • Establish a positive professional relationship with the families of special needs children and serve as communication link between parents and all service providers.
  • Maintain records and reports in a timely and complete manner, provide documentation of each home visits with the parent’s signature, date and time.
  • Attend Individualized Family Service Plan Staffing, training, and meetings as required.
  • Assist the Therapist in developing and implementing individual programs for children according to Individualized Family Service Plan.
  • Initiate and maintain plans for professional growth and development through continued education and professional affiliations.
  • Assist in maintaining a lending library inventory of appropriate toys and materials.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

  • Knowledge of special education needs in children.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern educational theory and practice.
  • Ability to analyze problems relating to student’s educational, social, economic and cultural needs and makes appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare detailed written reports as required.
  • Ability to benefit and effectively use skills learned during workshops, in-service and other staff development activities.
  • Ability to confer with parents of children in special education.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concept such as probability and statistical inference;
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to instruct other adults, especially by good role modeling and appropriate instruction with infants and toddlers.
  • Possess a sense a humor, patience, calmness, warmth, physical stamina and flexibility.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with people of varied economic, educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free Workplace as a condition of employment with the Gila River Indian Community.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience working with children who have developmental delays.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Early Intervention (EI) Staff will be provided the Universal Online Part C EI Curriculum as part of their EI Professional Development (PD) This EI Curriculum is a requirement and to be completed within one (1) year of hire. EI’s will share consistent, research based methods and materials for use as a training tool and/or family resource across the Gila River Indian Community.
  • Copy of current Fingerprint Clearance Card must be provided when applying for this position and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Required to pass background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment. Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.
  • Obtain CPR & First Aid Certification within one (1) month of hire.
  • Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.
  • Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.
  • Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit . Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
  • Must have documentation of having the primary series of COVID-19 vaccine and recommended boosters as they are eligible to receive in accordance with most up to date guidance from the GRIC Tribal Health Department and the CDC, prior to the date of hire.
