The Survey Instrument Technician performs technical survey work of average difficulty as part of a survey crew. Survey Instrument Technicians operate electronic measuring, data collecting devices, and other survey instruments in the performance of survey work.

· Operate various surveying engineering instruments such as transit, level theodolite, and electronic distance measuring devices.

· Locate and establish lines, critical points, and angles.

· Establish relationship of surface features with each other by angles, elevations, and distances.

· Dig ground using pick, shovel, and other hand tools to search for and locate survey monuments.

· Cut and remove brush and undergrowth for line of sight.

· Compile notes for level circuits, traverse closures, precise levels, property corners, topography notes, horizontal and vertical curves, and cross-sections for earthwork, calculations and building grades.

· Hold and plumb rod in obtaining elevations and distances; hold survey chain in measuring distances.

· Drive stakes to set grades on construction projects.

· Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

· Knowledge of civil engineering and survey terminology.

· Knowledge of basic construction procedures and techniques.

· Knowledge of procedures and techniques required for the accurate recording of survey data.

· Ability to read and understand plans, blueprints, and specifications.

· Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in the English language.

· Ability to perform algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations.

· Ability to understand and follow standard surveying practices and procedures.

· Ability to exercise sound judgment in completing assignments.

· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

· Ability to travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at construction sites.

· Ability to measure distance using a tape measure or electronic distance measuring device.

· Ability to prepare accurate survey notes, records, and sketches on work performed or data secured.

· Ability to use a hand held calculator to perform mathematical calculations.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the general public.

· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a drug-free workplace.

High School diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in survey engineering, which includes one (1) year of field experience conducting land surveys which provided knowledge of survey equipment and survey crew activities; or any combination of education, training and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the position.

· Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application
