Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit company, has a full-time, exempt opportunity available for an Accounting Manager.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager will have a key role in managing the accounting close activities and accounting operations of the organization. This position oversees and manages designated members of the Accounting team.

The Accounting Manager will provide cross-departmental financial reporting preparation and oversight, including compliance, accounting and reporting for grants, restricted donations and endowments; ensure transactions are in recorded in accordance with GAAP and internal policies and controls are followed.   Assist with the independent audit, tax returns and other regulatory filings as needed. Perform other accounting functions and reporting for internal and external reporting purposes.   The finance department is a small but resourceful team; the ability to roll up your sleeves to successfully drive financial operations and projects to completion is critical.

This is a hybrid role with a home office in GSEMA’s Andover, MA office with travel to other council offices or properties as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform accurate and timely completion of daily and monthly accounting entries.
  • Manage the finance month-end closing process
  • Assist with audit, regulatory and tax schedule preparation.
  • Prepare and assist in preparation of financial and administrative reports for planning and budgeting purposes.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed and thorough files concerning council financial transactions, records and reporting.
  • Prepare and reconcile all accounting responsibilities for invested assets including endowment allocations.
  • Prepare and maintain Schedule of Temporarily Restricted Net Assets and reconciliation of all restricted and unrestricted contributions
  • Assist in the development and process re-design of grant reporting including regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise members of the Accounting team by providing leadership and management oversight through regularly scheduled individual check-ins and team meetings.
  • Perform reconciliations of general ledger accounts, investigation and correcting entries as necessary to ensure accurate recording and reporting in compliance with GAAP.
  • Assist with the development and documentation of accounting processes, policies, and controls.
  • Adhere to the council’s internal financial controls and policies to ensure the council’s assets are protected. 
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other teams to operationalize and implement new systems and processes.
  • Actively drive efficiency through automation and streamlining accounting processes. 
  • Support certain key Finance team key activities / functions in backup coverage roles when necessary. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Staff “All Hands on Deck” (AHOD) events as needed (some evenings and weekends required).

Skills and Qualifications:

  • College degree in Accounting.
  • Five (5) plus years of general ledger accounting work experience preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end accounting processes, specifically around month-end close.
  • Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), especially for not-for-profit organizations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; work collaboratively with team members and other functional areas to further council goals.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office (Excel, Word), including managing large data files utilizing excel pivot tables.
  • Ability to handle high volume tasks; excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively identify, analyze and solve practical problems and successfully manage a variety of variables and personalities; ability to adapt in a changing environment.
  • Capacity to, independently and as part of a team, plan, organize and prioritize work, while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and willing to learn new skills, processes and software applications.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, thoroughness and quality of work; excellent attention to detail.
  • Experience with Abilia MIP system a plus
  • Experience with CampMinder, Netsuite, Salesforce, Opsuites, Doubleknot and Raiser’s Edge systems a plus. 
  • Experience with data conversions related to system migrations and upgrades a plus.

 Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift and manipulate up to 15 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. 
  • May involve prolonged periods of sitting or working on a computer.
  • May need to ascend and descend stairs or ramps in office and other settings.

Travel Requirements: 

Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to GSEMA offices/service centers and across the Council service area as needed. Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to motor vehicle is preferred.
