What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Designer position at Glenn Metalcraft Inc?
Mission: The Mechanical Designer has the overall responsibility for designing, drafting, and updating new and existing products, tooling, and fixturing, and effectively investigates and develops solutions to manufacturing support requests for both internal and external customers.
The Mechanical Designer will work from the Glenn Metalcraft Inc - Princeton, MN office. Core operating hours are 7:00am - 3:30pm Monday through Friday, however flexible hours may be considered.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Create SolidWorks designs and drawings for new and existing products, tooling, and fixturing.
- Use and apply basic mechanical fits/tolerances/GD&T principals and stack-ups to new and existing products.
- Maintain CAD files and corresponding documents in PDM system.
- Order entry into ERP system for purchasing tooling and fixturing components.
- Process engineering change requests and orders, updating all applicable documents to current company standards.
- Effectively working with various manufacturing departments in developing new and existing designs and drawings.
- Perform investigation to obtain missing information and to ensure all specifications are correctly presented in documentation.
- Understand customer needs, apply technical knowledge to support process requirements and implement custom solutions.
- Transform initial rough product designs from customers into working documents.
- Create approval drawings for customer review and approval.
- Work professionally, cooperatively, and effectively with all in the organization and outside the organization (i.e., customers, suppliers, etc.).
- Consider safety, ergonomics, and efficiency of fixture designs.
- Work concurrently on one or more projects.
The successful candidate will preferably meet the following qualifications:
- General CNC programming knowledge
- Tool and die building experience
- Proficient with SolidWorks
- Experience with SolidWorks weldments and sheet metal design
- ERP software experience (JobBoss preferred)
- Thorough knowledge of drafting standards and GD&T with ability to effectively apply both
- Familiarity with machining processes such as milling, turning, and grinding
- Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication processes such as welding, grinding, laser, water jet, brake press, rolling, sawing, etc.
- Ability to provide a high attention to detail
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Able to effectively organize and plan personal workload
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Outlook, Excel, Word
- Skill in written and oral communication with the ability to interface with people across multiple functional areas
