BACKGROUND:
Global Support and Development (GSD) is a humanitarian organization whose mission is to rapidly respond to disasters in collaboration with at-risk communities and support them to prepare for future disasters. We value collaboration and seek opportunities to amplify the work of others in-country, both in preparation for and in response to disasters. By integrating our team’s diverse skill sets and resources into local responses, we are able to provide rapid response assistance to affected communities in coordination with regional and country-level partners. We also work to build local capacity through community-led preparedness initiatives. GSD’s priority Area of Engagement is currently Latin America and the Caribbean, with targeted support to the South Pacific (and expected future increase in operations for 2024 and beyond).
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Maritime Operations Specialist will implement operational procedures, processes, and systems and oversee the day to day coordination of maritime activities onboard GSD’s Humanitarian Vessel (HV) for both GSD and key partners. This Maritime Operations Specialist will report directly to the Director of Maritime Operations and Planning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Support a high-performing and matrixed team with operational coordination of disaster response, information management, and capacity strengthening activities for GSD’s HV;
- Work within the Maritime section to establish and maintain awareness of HV’s location, status, readiness, and operational capacities;
- Support the Maritime HQ and HV Crew as the primary point of contact for routine day-to-day operational matters and lead the development of the staff and crew’s daily routines and processes;
- Ensure planned HV activities (response, partner engagements, trainings) are accurately represented in the HV Operational Schedule (HVOS) and communicated to necessary stakeholders;
- Understand and communicate needs and operational constraints of key partners and planned HV activities;
- Coordinate the embarkation of and onboard management GSD Mission Staff (to include GSD’s Disaster Response Team, when embarked), Partners, and Key Stakeholders onto GSD’s HV;
- Support HV Team Leadership in the drafting, executing, and amending HV staff duty calendars;;
- Act as the initial HV touchpoint for the broader organization during both routine and unexpected events or incidents;
- Ensure all HV activities are in accordance with GSD’s core values and mission and, when appropriate, the Humanitarian SPHERE principles;
- Engage on the subject of maritime humanitarian impact;
- Prompt and action GSD’s core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work we conduct;
- Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Experience:
- Three (3) years or more of relevant experience supporting operational coordination / program management;
- Three (3) years or more of enabling operational planning initiatives; and
- Two (2) years or more of providing administrative support to operational personnel.
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Emergency/Disaster Management, Maritime Studies, Marine Transportation, Marine Operations, Marine and Environmental Science, or relevant field; or
- Equivalent experience and training.

- N/A
Knowledge/Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills;
- Proficient in Google workspaces, particularly Google Sheets;
- Ability to understand and adapt to dynamic operational environments;
- Familiarity with maritime operations and general maritime environment;
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to rapidly shift tasks;
- Experience working and/or traveling domestically and internationally; and
- Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French desired.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- At this time, GSD is not offering sponsorship and is only accepting applications from persons eligible to work in the United States; and
- Routine domestic and international travel up to 25% is required to support mission activity for prolonged periods (approximately 2 weeks at a time).
