Qualifications Required:
- An interpreter for the deaf/hard of hearing shall meet the qualifications as set forth in Deaf Persons’ Interpreters Act, 1982 PA 204 as amended 2007-Rules June 2014; EIPA Elementary or Secondary 3.5 or above and able to attain EIPA 4.0 by August 31, 2016; RID certification or BEI, 2 or 3; apply for and maintain certification credentials with OCR/DODHH
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) with ITP program preferred
- Will demonstrate a command of both written and oral English including correct syntax, semantics and spelling
- Ability to communicate and work well with students, staff and parents
- Highly organized
Responsibilities:
- Obtaining information regarding the communication and academic levels of the student for whom he/she will be interpreting
- Maintaining appropriate logistic/physical considerations for quality interpreting, including lighting, dress, positioning, punctual attendance; etc.
- Interpreting the total class environment or activity to maximize the student’s opportunities to obrtain all information and communication; besides VOICING, transliteration and voice interpreting, the interpreter will paraphrase, redefine and summarize when necessary
- Acting as a member of the educational team by providing the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing with input relative to the student’s use of the interpreter in the mainstream setting
- Maintaining the integrity of the oral or sign philosophy/systems designated by the program for use as it meets each student’s need
- Reviewing and become familiar with content and vocabulary of the class to be interpreted including use of technical signs and spelling of terminology used
- Work as a member of an instructional team that includes teachers, itinerants and administrative staff
- Assist with the preparation of instructional materials
- Maintain confidentiality of student information as appropriate
- The interpreter will keep all school related information strictly confidential. School related information my be shared, however, among professionals directly related to or working with student (e.g., counselor, general education teacher, deaf/hard of hearing teacher or another interpreter)
