Job Title:  Special Education Para Educator - 6 Hrs/Day                              

Reports to:   Building Principal                 

Bargaining Group:   CCA Class 1                                                       

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

 

Terms of Employment:    6 HOURS P/DAY -

PAY:   $23.38-$26.30 per hour based on prior experience

 

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED; You must upload a copy of your HS diploma or GED
  • Meet ESEA Para-professional Qualifications (72 Quarter Credits from an Accredited College/University or passing the ETS Test) 

GRADE LEVEL:  PRE-12

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

FOLLOW DISTRICT, LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL STATUTES RELEVANT TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

  • School District Policy and Procedures
  • Building emergency procedures
  • Complete appropriate reports/documentation as applicable 

MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE AND LEGAL LEVEL OF CONFIDENTIALITY OF INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENTS, STAFF AND OTHER INDIVIDUALS HAVING BUSINESS WITH AND ACCESS TO THE SCHOOL

  • Exhibit ethical behavior at all times
  • Follow confidentiality procedures 

MAINTAIN A SAFE, CLEAN, AND ORGANIZED ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF

  • Assist in disinfecting equipment
  • Assist in arraigning chairs and classroom furniture
  • Assist in setting up and taking down classroom
  • Assist in taking inventory of classroom materials
  • Order supplies as specified by the teacher
  • Create and update student files

SET-UP FOR DAILY AND PERIODIC ACTIVITIES

  • Prepare classroom supplies/materials
  • Supervise student(s) 
  • Locate materials for teacher requests
  • Preview new computer programs
  • Collect samples of student work for IEP meetings
  • Record daily grades/grade reports as assigned by the teacher
  • File students’ completed work
  • Take student classroom attendance daily
  • Take student attendance at school assemblies
  • Prepare lesson plans for Special Ed. Assistant substitute
  • Add new students to computer programs as needed
  • Provide continuity during teacher’s absence

PREPARATION TO ASSIST THE CLASSROOM TEACHER WITH INSTRUCTION AS ASSIGNED

  • Prepare, collect and organize daily materials
  • Assist in preparation and delivery of lesson materials
  • Correct student assignments
  • Create instructional materials
  • Review Students' objective and write lesson plans
  • Write assignments on the board
  • Tape books for audio learning
  • Document daily activities of students

PROVIDE ASSISTANCE WITH ALL INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES, GAMES, ETC. FOR THE STUDENT, AS ASSIGNED BY THE TEACHER

  • Assist students with cutting, gluing, etc.
  • Read stories to students
  • Provide small group or 1-1 instruction
  • Provide specially designed instruction as per IEP for each student
  • Provide instruction  on  use of computers
  • Assist students with 1-1 interaction and modeling
  • Reinforce OT, PT and Speech goals according to the IEP
  • Assist with construction of student-generated bulletin boards
  • Observe students’ performance
  • Administer timings for academic practice
  • Administer and score assessments
  • Assist students in preparing for classroom tests 

ASSIST WITH THE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF CHILDREN

  • Assist with special needs equipment including walkers, wheelchairs, etc.
  • Help students enter and exit school bus
  • Escort/assist students in school environment

MAINTAIN POSITIVE COMMUNICATION AMONG STUDENTS, PARENTS AND SCHOOL STAFF

  • Identify students’ interests in order to use with instruction and to maintain contact
  • Communicate with the teacher
  • Check book bags for notes and or any parent-to-school communication
  • Confer with teachers and specialists relevant to student needs
  • Attend meetings when required
  • Schedule and notify teacher of IEP meetings as requested by teacher 

ASSIST WITH THE INSTRUCTION OF PERSONAL HYGIENE

  • Educate students about personal hygiene
  • Help with toilet and toilet training
  • Remind students to wash hands
  • Wash students’ faces and wipe noses
  • Change soiled clothes when necessary

MONITOR AND PROVIDE POSITIVE DISCIPLINE AS NECESSARY

  • Supervise student in cafeteria/playground/lunch/activities as appropriate
  • Document student behavior as appropriate
  • Attend behavioral issues firmly, but positively
  • Be available to assist teacher with any discipline problems
  • Follow school-wide discipline plan and procedures

CONTINUE JOB PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Participate in appropriate in-service programs/educational opportunities
  • Read and study new or updated job__related resources 

PERFORM DUTIES WITH A HIGH DEGREE OF COURTESY AND RESPECT

 

PERFORM OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BY THE ADMINISTRATOR/SUPERVISOR

Persons holding this position: 

  • Must pass a criminal background check that meets required state, federal, and Clarkston School District standards.
  • Will have occasional evening hours during school functions as assigned

  • Basic math, simple fractions such as measurements, ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division without using a calculator.
