Job Title:
Animal Care Team Member
Job Type: Part-time Hours: Varies, 8 – 5:40pm weekdays and weekends
Pay Rate: Hourly, Dependent on Qualifications Reports to: Executive Director
Job Summary:
Works as a valued team member to provide high-quality care for sheltered pets, and quality customer service for our clients.
Animal Care Team Members must support Great River Rescue’s mission, philosophies and practices.
Superior customer service, consistent humane handling of animals, and fundraising are priorities for every GRR staff member and volunteer. Performs duties in a safe and professional manner that is in accordance to GRR’s Code of Conduct.
Specific Job Duties:
(Team members may or may not be responsible for all job duties on a daily basis depending on their scheduled position. All team members are expected to be familiar with all tasks and to help as needed.)
Kennels
- Clean and maintain kennels and animal living areas according to approved procedures on a daily basis.
- Clean other shelter areas. Sweep, take out garbage, wash windows, etc.
- Clean and maintain shelter equipment: i.e. carriers, leashes, brushes, etc.
- Wash food and water bowls and put them away in an orderly fashion.
- Wash litter boxes and other kennel supplies.
- Administer medications to shelter pets as needed following approved procedures.
- Provide each animal with food and water following approved feeding protocols.
- Assist with the check-in of new animals and intake exam.
- Assist with blood draws, insertion of microchips, and other medical needs.
- Follow proper safety measures and procedures when using chemicals and cleaning supplies
- Assist other employees, clients, and volunteers in a cheerful and respectful manner as a representative of Great River Rescue
- Run laundry through washing machine and dryer and fold
- Keep maintain a clean and organized warehouse
- Log all noteworthy animal medical and behavior issues in animal profiles
- Conduct self-initiated and assigned training and development activities
- Work as a team member with staff and volunteers
- Show care and concern for animals
- Keep informed on the behavior traits of animals within the shelter
Administrative
- Maintain digital and physical records of in-take of animals, adoptions, and fosters
- Assist clients through the adoption and foster process
- Assist as needed with photos and written narratives of new animals
- Complete animals’ paper profiles and ensure accuracy
- Manage daily financial transactions using Square.com and the Square App
- Direct volunteers as needed and inform them of animal behavior and medical issues
- Coordinate with other team members on adoptions, surrenders, and overall animal management
- Manage and stay aware of adoption appointments
- Keep Adopt-a-Kennel book and cards updated and send out pictures to participants monthly
- Keep membership folder updated and send out renewal notifications
- Keep kennel cards updated
- Prepare the front desk for current business day- check supplies, forms, etc
- Answer phone calls and take messages as needed. Listen to voicemails and respond accordingly
- Check mail, open, distribute and respond as needed
- Check GRR email and respond as needed
- Respond to adoption and other inquiries via email and social media
- Review all adoption and foster applicants and approve or decline as appropriate.
- Ensure confidential material is secured and out of public view
- Keep client profiles updated in online shelter software
- Upload pertinent documents to client and animal profiles
- Record in-kind contributions and store items appropriately
- Keep paper forms stocked and organized
- Add and manage lost/found pet listings
- Manage intake/surrender appointments in online shelter software
- Keep outreach materials stocked and distribute as appropriate
- Manage incoming volunteer applications respond to prospective volunteers
- Keep employee files and manuals updated and organized
Customer Service
- Provide excellent customer service and answer client questions and concerns
- Inform clients of their responsibilities as new pet owners or foster care providers
- Build and maintain positive relationships with shelter volunteers
Other Duties
- Work as a productive and encouraging team member
- Show care and concern for animals
- Keep informed on the behavior traits of animals within the shelter
- Keep lobby, bathroom, and meeting room supplied and tidy for customers during the day
- All other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director
Skills/Qualifications:
- Should enjoy working with dogs and cats
- Able to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Must display good critical thinking skills
- Able to humanely handle animals under various circumstances
- Able to work harmoniously with other employees
- Able to stand for long periods of time
- Able to lift and carry 40 lbs bags and boxes
- Able to bend and squat regularly
- Able to handle large animals (up to 100 lbs dog)
- Must be punctual, reliable, and responsible
- Proficient using computer programs and tablet computers.
Requirements:
- Hours may vary from Monday – Sunday, 8 am – 5 pm
- Attend regular staff meetings as scheduled
Work Conditions
Works in an area with a high noise level. Requires handling of animals and exposure to fumes from cleaning chemicals. Subject to animal, dander, bites and scratches. Exposure to biological and potentially zoonotic agents. Required to adhere to staff dress code at all times. May be required to work beyond the scheduled hours.
