Swim Lessons Instructor
Are you looking for an enjoyable indoor part-time job teaching people to swim between the age groups of 6 months-120 years of age? The Altoona Campus is currently accepting applications for Swim Instructors to join our team for our 2024 winter, spring, summer, and/or fall lessons.
Overview: Under general supervision, Swim Lessons instructors create a safe environment to teach swimming skills and how to be safe in and around the water.
Pay: $15.00/hour, non-exempt. Benefits include a free Altoona Campus employee membership and 20% off selected Campus programs and apparel.
Job Location: Altoona Campus (1500 8th Street SW Altoona, IA 50009)
Qualifications:
- Must be 15 years old or older.
- Must be able to have or obtain an unexpired Red Cross lifeguard certification OR a Red Cross CPR for the professional rescuer certification.
- Must attend a Campus Swim training course prior to the start of the swim lessons session that the prospective employee will teach/aid in.
- Must have effective & professional communication skills, be patient, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Must demonstrate competency in swim lessons skills such as (but not limited to): floats, swim strokes, treading, turns, and dives.
Responsibilities:
- Know and demonstrate competency in the Altoona Campus/Altoona Campus Aquatics Department Emergency Action Plans and the location of emergency equipment.
- Abide by Campus rules and the Altoona Campus pool rules.
- Attend staff meetings and swim instructor in-services.
- Help maintain a safe swimming environment for students.
- Have knowledge of swimming lessons equipment (location, how to use equipment, etc.)
- Follow the designated block plan created for the level you are teaching or aiding.
- Observe, aid, and provide positive and effective feedback to students to better their skills.
- Set class rules to ensure safety in and around the water.
- Go over the designated water safety topics to educate students on how to be safe in and around the water.
- Complete swim lessons cards at the end of the session, discussing progress and checking the skills each student has successfully completed for the level they are enrolled in.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

Session 1 Dates: June 2nd - June 13th, Monday-Friday for 2 weeks
Session 2 Dates: June 16th - June 27th, Monday-Friday for 2 weeks
Session 3 Dates: July 7th -July 18th, Monday-Friday for 2 weeks
Session 4 Dates: July 21st - August 1st, Monday-Friday for 2 weeks
