Purpose of Position
The purpose of positions in this classification is to provide inmate custody, security, and control tasks, under the supervision of the on-shift Jail Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain for Greene County. Incumbents are on an entry-level, probationary period.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Maintain control over jailed inmates.
Escort prisoners inside and outside jail.
Intervene in altercations and mediate disputes.
Use direct supervision to provide incentives for responsible behavior and disciplinary treatment for inappropriate behavior.
Conduct cell inspections for contraband and damage and confiscate contraband, if necessary.
Control the flow of mail into and out of the jail facility, including collecting and searching mail for prohibited items.
Maintain activity logs.
Recommend appropriate actions regarding the disposition of the inmates to the shift supervisor. This includes evaluation of segregated inmates.
Book incoming inmates into jail.
Enter all information into the computer system regarding all incoming prisoners and court actions received on inmates. This includes relaying information to other departments and personnel.
Responsible for general maintenance of jail and its facilities. This includes inspecting all cells for cleanliness and ensuring bathrooms are clean and sanitized.
Supervise visits, inmate feeding, church services and other inmate activities, including direction and supervision of all trustee workers.
Assist other officers with problems.
Escort non-jail personnel.
Review outstanding warrants and compare with inmate roster.
Perform first aid and other emergency procedures as necessary.
Participate in on-going training.
Perform other duties as may be required, including but not limited to other functions in the Records, Booking, and Mail divisions.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
Assist in the transportation of inmates to facilities outside of the jail.
Prepare cleaning supplies.
Answer phone.
Assist with laundry.
Take out trash to dumpster.
Change light bulbs.
Inspect fire and safety equipment.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Applicants interested in becoming a Detention Officer must have a high school diploma or GED, and must be at least 18 years of age. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Military, security, or criminal justice experience or education is preferred. Vocational or technical training in office procedures, preferably related to law enforcement is desired. Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
Successful applicants will participate in a 4-week Detention Officer Academy upon hire and complete a field training officer period as required.

Ability to communicate effectively with law enforcement personnel, attorneys, clergy, inmates, jail staff, Sheriff’s Department personnel, medical care providers, and jail visitors.
Mathematical Ability
Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, and ratios. Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
Ability to use functional reasoning in performing influence functions such as supervising, managing, leading, teaching, directing, and controlling.
Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable criteria.
Physical Requirements
Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery with some requiring complex and rapid movements, such as restraint devices, firearms, peppers spray devices, two-way radio, flashlight, keys, and tools such as a computer and other office machines, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing semi-skilled movements such as using restraint devices.
Ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving picking up, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 100 pounds.
Ability to stand for up to 12 hours at a time.
Ability to exert physical force sufficient to restrain or subdue individuals.
Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, shapes, sounds, odors, and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under potentially hazardous and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as violence, irate individuals, intimidation, and disease can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
Condition of Employment
Employee will be required to demonstrate continued knowledge of this position’s current regulations and requirements. Sustained satisfactory performance is required. Employee must meet the requirements of the full job description as stated throughout the duration of employment with Greene County.
