JOB TITLE: Health Assistant

REPORTS TO: Corporation Nurse

SUPERVISES: Non-Applicable

EMPLOYMENT AND FLSA STATUS: Classified/Non-Exempt/Hourly

POSITION PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the corporation nurse, to dispense medications and care for students in the event of illness or injury.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates skill and proficiency in carrying out assignments

  • Possesses skills and knowledge to perform the job competently

  • Skill at planning, organizing and prioritizing workload (For self and direct reports, If applicable)

  • Holds self accountable for assigned responsibilities; sees tasks through to completion in a timely manner

  • Proficiency at improving work methods and procedures as a means toward greater efficiency

  • Communicates effectively with supervisor, peers, and stakeholders

  • Demonstrates ability to work independently

  • Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with supervision or as part of a team

  • Demonstrates reliability (attendance, punctuality, meeting deadlines)

  • Adeptness at analyzing facts, problem solving, decision making, and demonstrating good judgement

  • Displays fairness towards all colleagues

  • Serve as a paraprofessional to care for students in the event of illness or injury. Should the health assistant possess a nursing license, they may perform tasks that a licensed nurse may perform. Practice will be guided by Clinic Guidelines provided by the corporation nurse.

  • Maintain permanent health records.

  • Provide basic first-aid as outlined in the designated first-aid certification course.

  • Examine all children presenting themselves to the health services area.

  • Maintain regulations for children taking medication at school.

  • Post health information on permanent records and organize the records of students new to the school.

  • Assist other health services employees in identifying, or by verifying, cases of communicable diseases, reporting head lice and other infestations, educating students and staff about universal precautions, distributing lists of medical concerns on students and participating in screening programs as directed by the corporation nurse.

  • Perform clerical responsibilities on a daily basis to ensure health related information is readily accessible when needed.

  • Maintain a safe and pleasant health room environment.

  • Collect necessary data to complete student, employee and visitor accident reports, including follow up information. Submit completed forms to the designated insurance representative and central office designee.

  • Maintain knowledge of school hazard drills, safety, and accident prevention programs.

  • Oversee proper and timely completion of all required student health procedures and programs as mandated by both state and federal laws/rules and board policy.

  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

  • Complete other duties as assigned by the corporation nurse or building principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic first aid and diabetic care.

  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.

  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.

  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.

  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Prior experience working with children, preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs.

  • Ability to carry 25 lbs.

  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.

  • Ability to see for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed material.

  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.

  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.

  • Ability to operate office equipment.

  • Ability to reach in all directions.

  • 185 Days per School Year
