Cross Connection Control Trainee and Technician

Reports To Cross Connection Control Coordinator

Job Summary

Assists with the inspection of all actual and potential cross connections for proper backflow prevention measures, compiles and enters GIS data, and performs various technical duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

• Assists with reviewing and approving fire-line plans, including inside and underground fire-line designs, fire pump designs, large meter pit designs, etc.; determines fire pit location, backflow location, meter pit arrangement and proper installation.
• Assists with inspecting cross connections, fire-line pits, water meter pits, backflow devices, inside sprinkler systems, irrigation installations, water trucks, etc., to ensure compliance with system specifications, rules and regulations.
• Assists with conducting flow tests throughout system; determines adequate flows and pressures; ensures integrity of flow systems; locates underground water mains; sets pressure loggers; maintains related documentation.
• Maintains cross connection data and files; enters test results; documents need for repair and installation and forwards to customer.
• Obtains and organizes drawings, measurements, and plat file information for use in main, valve and hydrant locating; creates as-built drawings for new fire line connections; collects raw data for use in mapping database; maintains database files.
• Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns and complaints from customers regarding department projects and services.
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations on job site.
• Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including engineering drawings, work orders, tap orders, meter lists, backflow test forms, locate orders, fire-line contracts, memos, correspondence, etc.
• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other department supervisors and employees, customers, engineers, Fire Marshals, contractors, City/County personnel, property/business owners, and the general public.
• Assist with testing and make repairs to all forms of backflow prevention devices.
• Verify water availability for proprieties with possible existing meter services.
• Performs other related duties as required.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

Trainee

A High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by some experience with backflow testing, plumbing or related field, is required; or possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license.

Technician

A High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by three (3) years of experience as cross control connection trainee, is required; or possession of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license, a valid backflow prevention certification, and a level C Water Distribution Certification.
