What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Treatment Plant Operator position at Gulf Coast Water Authority?

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting with and learning all aspects of the operation of the water treatment plant in full compliance with the rules and regulations of GCWA, State of Texas and Federal Government.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  1. Operate and maintain all aspects of the WTP, with instruction and oversight from a Lead Operator.
  2. Learn the fundamentals of proper water treatment by participating in a wide variety of on-the-job tasks, classes and independent study.
  3. Monitor plant operations, including controlling major pumps and motors and inform the Lead Water Plant Operator of any observed or suspected problems while taking corrective or preventative action, as instructed.
  4. Take readings and measurements of unit processes, collect samples, record measurements and help maintain accurate records of plant operational and maintenance functions.
  5. Apply chemicals to water; add disinfectants.
  6. Operate and maintain clarifiers, clear well and distribution systems, and filtration systems.
  7. Collect and analyze water samples; record data.
  8. Operate reservoir gates on weekends.
  9. Monitor security cameras and gate entrance controls.
  10. Assist in the maintenance and repair of machines and equipment used to process and distribute water.
  11. Operate hand and power tools as well as equipment like tractors, mowers and forklifts etc.
  12. Assist in the repair of electric motors, pumps, valves, pipes, chlorinators, ammoniators, air movers, inductors, and backflow preventers.
  13. Detect malfunctions by inspecting machines and equipment.
  14. Assist in preventive maintenance activities; such as repairs and replacing parts etc.
  15. Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on plant equipment and structures & assist maintenance staff with major or unusual maintenance tasks.
  16. Perform basic physical and chemical analysis to monitor treatment efficiency.
  17. Ensure all external customers, vendors, contractors, government regulators & members of the public relationships are maintained in a professional and productive basis.
  18. Contribute to a safe work environment by following the Authority’s safety rules, guidelines and procedures.
  19. Interact with organization team members and other departments in a professional manner.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  1. The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking.  The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color.  
  2. The work is typically performed in a water treatment plant or in a remote location, outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.  The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and irritating chemicals. Subject to 24-7-365 call out & serve on hurricane crew.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERRED SKILLS      

  1. Knowledge of water treatment plant operations and maintenance.
  2. Ability to obtain a Class D Water Operator License within 6 months from the date of hire.
  3. Skill in the safe use of vehicles, tools and equipment.
  4. Skill in the preparation of clear and precise reports.
  5. Skill in oral and written communication.
  6. High level understanding & competency in utilizing a wide variety of software & computer applications, including MS Office, Outlook, and other applications specific to the job.
  7. Ability to analyze problems and implement solutions.
  8. High School diploma required, associate or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  9. Valid Driver’s License.
