INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this job description is to define and establish the functions and requirements for the position, reporting relationships, duties and responsibilities, and measures of performance for the position of Driver Helper for Hakes Sash & Door (HSD).
BASIC FUNCTION
The primary function of the Driver Helper is to ride with the Driver to and from job sites off-loading and on-loading HSD Products. Duties will vary depending on the type of job you deliver and pick up from.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Driver Helper reports directly to the Dispatcher or the Operations Manager if the Dispatcher is absent.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
Required: High School graduate or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience:
- One year prior work experience as a Loader/Unloader for a construction company.
- Must have experience with heavy lifting and road safety.
License/Certification:
- Must have a valid Identification Card.
- CPR Certified is a plus.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand and take direction.
- Ability to accurately receive and/or deliver products to and from home sites.
- Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires standing for an extended length of time.
- Must have excellent eye sight and depth perception.
- Must be in sound physical condition and able to perform a physically demanding job.
- Must be able to lift to 100 pounds without assistance.
- The physical condition for this position is rough and sometimes vigorous; this will require off-loading materials to the appropriate work area.
Mental Requirements:
- Basic math skills including understanding how to calculate lengths of materials.
- Ability to communicate in English with employees, management, and customers.
- Must be able to follow maps and written instructions to locate customers’ or job site locations.
Work Environment:
- Warehouse and home site construction environment.
- Long and irregular hours. This may include some weekends and overtime.
- Exposure to extreme heat & cold weather conditions, dust, dirt, fumes, and loud noises.
- Road and driving hazards that comes with riding in a commercial truck.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Help Drivers inspect the load before leaving the shop. Spot check for quantities, and proper unit markings.
When at the home-site, check the safety of the walking paths to the units. If for some reason it is unsafe, immediately contact the Dispatcher to discuss what steps to take. Follow all HSD Safety Procedures and wear Hard Hats at all times while on the Job Site.
Make deliveries to multiple home sites and down-stack all materials off the trailer neatly and organized by lot per HSD Standards.
Help Driver with Parking on Job Site, unwrapped, untied, and ready to begin unloading materials properly by 7:00AM every day.
Help spread all material doors, jambs, shelving or Shortages to their proper locations. If for some odd reason you cannot deliver to the correct lot to immediately contact the Dispatcher and the Foreman that is on site.
Pick up any materials that was previously sent by mistake or returns.
To immediately communicate with the Dispatcher on any issues they might have with the truck or deliveries.
To attend Weekly Driver’s meeting.
To attend every scheduled shift. Tardiness and Absenteeism is vital to this role. You must be here or have informed the Dispatcher of your absence or tardy before the end of working hours the day prior.
To work in concert with the Dispatcher and Drivers on a daily basis.
To pick-up materials from vendors if instructed to do so.
To provide excellent customer service in receiving, checking, and delivery of our products.
Completes work as assigned by the Dispatcher and assigned Driver.
Ensures that Truck and cab is cleaned daily.
Obeys all company safety rules and regulations.
Performs any other duties and tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Dispatcher.
MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE
Proper inspections were done to check for errors on the loads prior to leaving the shop.
Safety was checked at the home site and the path to off-load the materials. Dispatcher was called on unsafe conditions.
Has picked up any materials that was previously sent by mistake or returns.
Has accurately and safely made home site deliveries.
Has assisted Drivers as needed to resolve any issues having to do with deliveries and maintenance issues.
Has worked in-concert with the Dispatcher and assigned Drivers on a daily basis.
Has maintained excellent customer service in receiving, checking, and delivery of our products.
Has cleaned the Truck and cab at the end of the work day.
Has obeyed all company safety rules and regulations.
Other duty assigned by the Dispatcher was performed in an accurate and timely manner.
Has maintained a good working relationship with co-workers.
Dispatcher has been informed in advance of any absence, late arrival or early departure.
All paperwork is accurate and on time.
The Dispatcher has been kept informed of any potential problems with equipment, truck, or delivery deadlines.
