Seeking a custodian for 1st shift, Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 p.m. The custodian works to provide students & staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, develop & work. Position starts immediately, open until filled.

General Purpose:

To provide Students & Staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play,develop & work.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position:

  • Ability to stand stoop, stretch, reach & bend
  • Ability to mount and dismount equipment
  • Ability to push and pull equipment
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to carry 25 pounds unassisted.
  • Ability to smell odors effectively.
  • Ability to see clearly.
  • Ability to climb ladders at least 10 feet

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Regulate heat and ventilation systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical use of fuel, water and electricity, (or ) call B&G Office for    further assistance.
  • Shovels, and/or sands/salts walks, and steps as appropriate. If Grounds assistance is needed, calls B&G Office.
  • Checks daily to make sure all exit doors are unlocked in the AM for the start of school and then locked after school begins for the remainder of the day. The main door will remain unlocked for entry.
  • All panic bars on doors are inspected to be in working order and reported if not.
  • Clean the floors in classrooms either by vacuuming, sweeping or mopping, as appropriate.  Rooms are cleaned of dust periodically enough to remain clear of dust.
  • Clean the corridors after school and/or during the day if condition requires said cleaning.
  • Scrub and disinfects rest room floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Wash all windows inside and outside at least twice each year, (or)  more frequently if necessary, depending on area of building.
  • Keep the ground free of rubbish.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
  • Reports any repairs in need of attention to the Custodial Foreman. Makes minor building  repairs as directed by the Custodial Foreman.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair.
  • Reports all machinery repair needs, immediately, to supervisor.
  • Reports to the building Administrator any damage to school property immediately.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and/or during non-school hours per shift schedule.
  • Assumes the responsibility for the opening and/or closing and securing of the building each day. All doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off by night shift custodians.
  • Moves furniture or equipment in buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Administrator.
  • Disposal of trash, rubbish, waste and recycling.
  • Labels all containers following the guidelines of the MSDS system.
  • Reports to the Custodial Foreman and looks for any daily instructions.
  • Complies with OSHA’s standards 29 CFR-1910.
  • Security of the building is the responsibility of all custodians.
  • Perform other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned
  • Must comply with all SAU 70 District policy and building / department rules, procedures, practices and objectives.
  • Must Check email daily for important communications from SAU & Facilities Depts.
  • Must be able to use internet for Time Cards & Time Off Requests daily.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • A high school degree or a GED or five (5) years experience is the minimum requirement for the position.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as district policy manuals, SDS information sheets, and other manuals for equipment used for maintaining the school and the grounds.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with colleagues, custodial foreman, staff, students and community members.
  • Ability to use email and internet based programs for time cards.
  • Ability to use such tools on the job that require reading and recording measurements.        
  • Ability to perform in a collaborative work environment. 
  • Mechanically literate.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to do physical labor.
  • Lifting may be involved and the custodian should be able to lift a minimum of fifty pounds unassisted.
  • The custodian should use discretion when completing all physical tasks to use support and/or other mechanical tools to aid in the completion of a task.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision.
  • Occasionally, yet essential to the position, the individual must meet deadlines with regard to maintaining his/her area of the building.
  • Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours and meet demands from the school system.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • Work is generally performed indoors with occasional responsibilities for outdoor work in accordance with the weather (snow removal, de-icing etc)
