Job Description



Job Title: Phlebotomist


Supervisor: Director of Laboratory

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt / PRN


Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; desired: ASCP Phlebotomy certification, and one year of related experience.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Verify orders received are accurate and work with physicians to make sure the orders are accurate and all essential information is available to test and be reimbursed for the testing. Discrepant orders will be shared with the supervisor for follow-up.
  • Verifies patient identification or seeks nurse for inpatients when ID is questionable
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipuncture and capillary collections from the heel and finger. Rarely may be trained to assist with central line collections.
  • Process specimens for testing including receiving, centrifuging, etc.
  • Process specimens for reference laboratory testing by centrifuging and aliquoting the specimen to maintain specimen integrity, ordering and labeling the specimen accurately, and packing the specimen in biohazardous packaging for shipment.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using an aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures.
  • Documents collected specimens directly on the sample and in LIS by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection. Appropriately rejects samples per sample rejection policy.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standard operating procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, staff members, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying the supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
  • Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and CLIA standards.
  • Enhances phlebotomy department and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. Adheres to the scope of work appropriate to phlebotomy training.
  • Working knowledge of computerized medical software; ability to quickly learn new technologies and changes in electronic medical record (EMR) workflow.
  • Will provide support as needed throughout the department
  • Receives and responds to patient inquiries via telephone and other methods, answers the phone, transfers and takes messages.
  • Fill in during vacations, evening, and Saturday rotation.
  • Demonstrates professionalism by: articulating & demonstrating professional behavior, accepting responsibility & accountability for actions, and ability to positively and effectively interact with physicians, mid-level practitioners, other members of the health care team, fellow staff, patients, etc.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding patient & business functions
  • Follow time & attendance policies & procedures
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; proficient with multi-tasking, ability to work independently
  • Ability to make decisions and initiate actions under stress.
  • Effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills
  • Embraces and participates in a teamwork-oriented environment
  • Aids in fostering a culture of continuous quality improvement and appropriately fills out quality improvement forms for unusual or out-of-compliance circumstances.
  • Follows all Harrison County Community Hospital District and departmental policies and procedures
  • All other duties as assigned by supervisor(s)
