GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs intermediate semiskilled and technical work in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facility equipment on an assigned shift; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a senior operator.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50-75 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. The worker must comply with appropriate safety rules, regulations and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Assisting with the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility as a trainee.
Makes regular tours of plant and equipment;
Records readings from meters, gauges and instruments;
Checks functioning of equipment;
Operates, lubricates and adjusts machinery (including sludge-dewatering and drying equipment);
Collects samples of raw and treated wastewater and sludge and performs basic physical and chemical analyses;
Pumps sludge, rakes bar screens and cleans and clears basins, troughs and other components;
Transports sludge/solids using heavy equipment;
Transports wastewater screenings and grit to the county landfill;
Cleans and services pumps, motors and other equipment;
Makes minor or emergency repairs;
Cleans and maintains plant spaces;
Performs grounds maintenance work;
Responds to emergency calls;
Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of the wastewater treatment equipment in the plant; some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles; some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of operations; ability to be contacted by phone in case of emergency; skill in the use and care of laboratory testing and analysis equipment and instruments; ability to comply with safety rules, regulations and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain a Class III Wastewater Operator’s License
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license.
Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule including weekends and holidays.
