What are the responsibilities and job description for the Garden Education Intern (Rainbow Day Camp) position at Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center?
Albert & Ann Deshur JCC Rainbow Day Camp is currently hiring energetic, passionate, and hard-working individuals for our inclusive summer day camp located in Fredonia, Wisconsin, that offers daily transportation to camp from bus stops in Whitefish Bay, Mequon, and Grafton. Guided by Jewish values, our camp fosters personal development, friendship and community for the children and teens in our care.
We are looking for a person passionate about gardening, food, and education to be involved in all aspects of our educational garden. You will learn the skills to instruct and engage grade school age youth in organic gardening in our large outdoor fruit and vegetable garden, hoophouse, greenhouse, and hydroponic units. Program topics include, but are not limited to plant parts, compost, vermicompost, photosynthesis, water cycle, plant life cycle and structure, awareness of food and farms, nutrition, and healthy eating. You will also be assisting in planting, maintaining, and harvesting the gardens. The Garden Education Intern reports to the Garden Director. The Garden Education Intern will also work with campers in a camp counselor setting during non-program times.
Essential Functions
- Learn how to use equipment and lesson plan for the program areas
- Prepare, lead, and evaluate programs
- Maintain and inventory all equipment necessary for the program areas
- Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities
- Communicate with Camp Director regarding camper’s experiences (positive and negative)
- Be aware and effectively address the group and social dynamics of campers
- Contribute to the Rainbow Day Camp team through spirit, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn
- Develop an appropriate counselor/camper relationship with every camper
- Be a quality role model for children
- Be able to encourage, support and set limits for children
- Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas
- Participate in activities such as spirit days, camp programs and songs
Requirements
- Must be at least 18-years old or graduated high school
- Complete all necessary staff paperwork requirements
- Upon hire, completion of provided First Aid and CPR certification.
- Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
- Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Willingness to have fun and encourage community at camp
