Position Description
The Cunningham Fellow is part of the Curatorial Fellowship Program at the Harvard Art Museums. This program is designed to broaden the experience of scholars considering professional and academic careers in the museum profession.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Academic Engagement, the Cunningham Fellow will support a range of teaching, learning, and research activities in the Division of Academic and Public Programs, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary university-level collaborations and the museums’ Graduate Student Teacher Program. The Fellow will research works of art, design learning experiences, and develop materials for class visits to the museums. The Fellow will assist with faculty outreach programs, compile and analyze data on the museums’ curricular activities, contribute to digital resources for teaching and learning, and support the museums’ curricular installations. In addition, the Fellow will support class visits within and outside of their area of expertise and will have the opportunity to work on museum education projects of personal interest.
Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Cunningham Fellow will share fully in a range of teaching, learning, and research activities in the Division of Academic and Public Programs. The Fellow will support teaching for all Harvard departments and schools at the Harvard Art Museums.
- Schedule class visits, monitor gallery closures and object availability, and communicate with academic staff as directed.
- Support interdisciplinary teaching initiatives. Working closely with faculty and teaching fellows, the Fellow will help design learning experiences and develop course materials for Harvard classes. This includes researching works in the collection and drafting applicable teaching notes.
- Support the Graduate Student Teacher Program, including attending weekly program meetings, and contributing to program design, organization, and workshop development.
- Support faculty outreach programs, including pedagogy workshops.
- Contribute to the development of digital resources for teaching and learning.
- Assist in compiling and analyzing the museums’ data related to teaching and learning.
- Assist with a range of curatorial activities in the museums’ curricular galleries, including preparation of gallery installations and interpretive materials.
- Foregrounding the museum’s teaching and research mission, the Fellow will also provide content expertise and support for class visits within their area of expertise as well as for the Art Museums’ Art Study Center (six hours a week for class and individual appointments); participate in a series of art handling workshops; and contribute to a rich offering of public and academic interpretive programs across various platforms.
- The Cunningham Fellow will be an active member of the larger Fellows’ cohort and will participate in regular cohort meetings and in the anticipated annual Fellows symposium at the end of the spring semester.
- May supervise students and temporary employees.
- May work on projects of personal interest, in the areas of, e.g., K-12, family programs, public education programs, or medical humanities programs.

Basic Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education, Art History, or a related field.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- University-level teaching experience in museums and/or classrooms preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with learning design in museums and/or classrooms.
- Demonstrated research skills, preferably related to art or other museum objects.
- Curatorial or related experience is helpful; interest in challenging canonical narratives is strongly encouraged.
- Commitment to fostering the appreciation of works of art in a museum context.
- Commitment to fostering museum literacy and a museum-going identity among students and other visitors.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks and ongoing projects.
- Demonstrated administrative skills, preferably through experience in a museum and/or higher education setting.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with others and maintain a positive, helpful attitude.
- Experience working with quantitative and qualitative data and/or program assessment preferred.
