ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
In order to fulfill the mission, goals and objectives of the Harvey County Sheriff's Office, officers and employees must have the ability to perform a variety of duties that are essential to the position. Therefore, all individuals applying for a Detention Center Deputy position will initially meet and maintain the following Essential Function sections as detailed in the Essential Functions for Entry Level Deputy Detention Center Officer to include:
1. Section 1 - Speak, Write, and Read Reports & Comprehend Other Documents;
2. Section 2 - Handle Human Relations Problems;
3. Section 3 - Engage in Physical Activities;
4. Section 4 - Conduct Search and Seizure;
5. Section 5 - Provide Emergency Assistance; &
6. Section 6 - Present Testimony.
7. Section 7 – Work different shifts
8. Section 8 – May work with a firearm or other weapons
An applicant for the position of Detention Center Deputy within the Harvey County Sheriff's Office that cannot perform these essential tasks will not be accepted. A current employee in the position of a Detention Center Deputy officer who is no longer able to comply with the requirements of the Sheriff's Office will be referred to the administration.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Individuals seeking employment with the Harvey County Sheriff's Office as a Detention Center Deputy Officer must:
1. Be a United States citizen;
2. Be a resident of Kansas, or become a resident within ninety [90] days of employment;
3. Be at least eighteen [18] years of age;
4. Possess a valid Kansas drivers license;
5. Never have been convicted of a felony, or a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude;
6. Be free of misdemeanor convictions for the last twelve [12] months;
7. Have no previous or current charges of driving while Intoxicated or driving under the Influence of drugs or alcohol;
8. Be subject to a thorough background investigation and personal interviews by agency personnel;
9. If served in the armed forces of any country, demonstrate stability, reliability, and integrity, by having an Honorable Discharge [Dishonorable, or General discharges are not acceptable];
10. Demonstrate a good financial credit rating for the last five [5] years;
11. Demonstrate reading and comprehension skills in the English language to at least the 10th grade level through interviews and written demonstration of proficiency;
12. Demonstrate honesty and integrity by successfully completing preemployment polygraph and drug testing;
13. Be free from illegal drug use, or legal drugs that impair mental or physical performance, for the past 5 years, as determined by interview, medical, or polygraph testing;
14. Be fingerprinted and subjected to a search of local, state, and national records and fingerprint files;
15. Undergo physical and psychological assessments by licensed professionals. If a physician or mental health professional identifies conditions that impede or prevent the individual from performing the essential tasks of this position, the applicant may not be eligible for employment as a Detention Center Deputy with the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office until such time as the issue or condition is resolved to the satisfaction of the original professional;
GENERAL DUTIES:
Detention Deputy of the Harvey County Sheriff's Office is required to:
1. Conduct Inmate Counts
2. Operate remote and manual cell locks;
3. Protect life;
4. Patrol and observe housing and confinement areas;
5. Monitor closed-circuit television;
6. Protect the constitutional rights of all persons encountered or arrested;
7. Subdue disorderly inmates;
8. Provide equal protection for all;
9. Use force sparingly and only when necessary to effect a lawful end;
10. Prevent escape attempts;
11. Arrive to work at a specified time in full regulation uniform, unless otherwise instructed;
12. Protect persons and property that may come under your charge or custody;
13. Be on duty in the prescribed uniform, and be mentally, emotionally and physically prepared to perform all required duties;
14. Remain on duty and fully conscious until the expiration of the shift, and/or relieved by a supervisor;
15. Maintain a clean and professional appearance while on duty;
16. Complete, and turn in before the end of each tour of duty, all reports and necessary paperwork;
17. Maintain sensitivity and provide equality to all races, religions, sexes, and cultural groups;
18. Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other agencies, and the public;
19. Attend and complete all required training and demonstrations of proficiency;
20. Establish and maintain liaison with local, county, state, federal agencies, and public officials; &
21. Abide by all lawful policies and procedures, orders, and instructions issued by superiors of the Harvey County Sheriff's Office.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
In addition to the General duties, Detention Deputies of the Sheriff's Office will perform the following specific duties. Deviations from the duties within this job description are subject to the prior written approval of the Detention Captain.
Detention Deputy will:
1. Upon assuming duties each shift, review general orders, post orders, directives, and policies and procedures for recent changes;
2. Book-in inmates, release inmates, resolve inmate disputes, answer inmate questions, and move inmates in and out of cells;
3. Supervise inmates during medical and dental treatment, supervise inmates during transport, observe and document inmate activities, operate transport vehicles;
4. Search confinement areas, search inmate property, strip search inmates when required, and search visitors when required;
5. Prepare disciplinary reports, investigate disciplinary reports, and participate in disciplinary board;
6. Collect, sort or distribute mail or correspondence, distribute inmate commissary orders and maintain logs;
7. Supervise visitation and supervise trusties activities;
8. Inspect equipment;
9. Testify or appear in court and do other duties as directed by supervisors
Physical Requirements:
1. Sit for long periods,
2. Stand for long periods.
3. Walk five miles.
4. Ambulate independently
5. Bend / Squat.
6. Drag/lift/carry heavy objects up to 160 pounds.
7. See at normal range or with accommodation.
8. Speak and understand English.
9. Hear at normal level or with accommodation
10. Have manual dexterity.
11. Kneel, Stoop, Crawl and climb stairs.
12. Run fast for short period to apprehend subject.
Required Education and/or Experience:
High school education or G.E.D.; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
Must possess strong computer skills that at a minimum include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and outside weather conditions.The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This job has some elements of personal danger.
CHAIN OF COMMAND:
Detention Deputies work within a shift supervised by the shift Sergeant. Annual and supplemental job performance evaluations are completed in writing and discussed with the performing Deputy by the shift Sergeant. During this interview session, the Deputy is provided a copy of the evaluation. The Deputy acknowledges receipt of the evaluation, and may respond in writing.
