General Statement of Duties
An HCPS Opportunity Schools
The teacher assigned to the Varina Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (VCESS) is an innovative educator committed to advancing environmental literacy through rigorous, interdisciplinary instruction. This position carries a full teaching load at Varina High School to include both VCESS and non-VCESS science courses and includes extended responsibilities beyond the traditional school year as part of an 11-month teaching assignment.
In addition to classroom teaching, the educator collaborates with HCPS educational specialists and community partners to design, implement, and refine curriculum aligned with the mission of the Varina Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability and the HCPS Living Building. The teacher supports the development of authentic, place-based learning experiences that integrate environmental science, sustainability, and civic engagement. This role contributes to the division’s broader goals by supporting curriculum development, instructional resource creation, and professional learning opportunities tied to environmental education initiatives across Henrico County Public Schools.
- Plan, organize and deliver instruction to meet individual and group learning needs utilizing state guidelines and division curriculum.
- Regularly exhibit considerable knowledge of learning theory and best practices.
- Consistently act in the best interests of students and model appropriate behavior in all professional interactions.
Essential Duties
The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
Professional Expectations:
- Develops environmental education curriculum and instructional resources to support the Varina Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability and the HCPS Living Building
- Collaborates with division staff and community partners to design interdisciplinary, place-based, and experiential learning experiences aligned with HCPS environmental literacy goals
- Plans daily instructional activities for secondary students, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using the VDOE Standards of Learning and the HCPS Aligned curriculum
- Coordinate and supervise work-based learning experiences and capstone projects.
- Manage weekly or biweekly VCESS Curriculum embedded field experiences
- Plan and participate in local and site-based field trips.
- Plan and participate in overnight, out-of-town field trips.
- Uses current school and division data to plan instruction
- Develops formative and summative tests, using multiple tools to assess student learning on an ongoing basis, and alters instruction to meet group and individual needs
- Maintains order within the classroom and school with proactive classroom management and a well-organized learning environment
- Maintains records of student performance and attendance, and communicates this effectively with students and their parents
- Selects, requisitions, and uses a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students
- Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff (special ed, gifted, remediation staff, etc.) relative to student learning
- Stays abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools
- Maintains a professional manner when interacting with students, parents, patrons, community agencies, and colleagues
- Incorporates and models the appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Teaching license in the above-mentioned curriculum is required.
- Applicants with a Bachelor's degree, relevant college coursework, and passing Praxis test scores are encouraged to apply
Additional Information
This posting is for an 11-month assignment with an July 14, 2025, contractual start date.
Annual salary for this position will be prorated to the start day.
