JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Dentist
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Medical Supervisor or Medical Director
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Dental Assistant
JOB SUMMARY:
Within the scope of licensing, training, credentialing, and privileging the Dentist diagnoses, treats, and manages patients with oral diseases and conditions. The Dentist provides education and consultation and prescribes or administers therapy, medication, and other specialized oral health care (including referrals to other providers) to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
1. Conducts dental screenings, examines teeth, gums, and related tissues to determine condition, using dental instruments, x-ray, and other diagnostic equipment;
2. Diagnoses, and treats or refers for treatment of, oral disease conditions;
3. Provides basic restorative care that includes: filling caries; and extracting and replacing teeth, using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical implements;
4. Applies fluoride and sealants to teeth;
5. Treats exposure of pulp by pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or root canal, using dental instruments;
6. Treats infected root canal and related tissues;
7. Fills pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials;
8. Eliminates irritating margins of fillings and corrects occlusions, using dental instruments;
9. Formulates plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue;
10. Removes pathologic tissue or diseased tissue using surgical instruments;
11. Restores natural color of teeth by bleaching, cleaning, and polishing;
12. Analyzes and evaluates dental needs to determine changes and trends in patterns of dental disease;
13. Counsels and advises patients about growth and development of dental problems; provides information or consultation to promote or facilitate oral health or prevent onset or worsening of oral health disorders;
14. Fabricates prosthodontic appliances, such as space maintainers, bridges, dentures, and obturating appliances;
15. Fits and adjusts prosthodontic appliances in patient's mouth;
16. Produces and evaluates dental health educational materials;
17. Plans, organizes, and maintains dental health programs;
18. Provides emergency care and treatment as necessary;
19. Documents complete information in dental records;
20. Participates as a member of the medical staff and adheres to the medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations;
21. Consultant to others and be expected to request consultation when: a) diagnosis and/or management remain in doubt over an unduly long period of time, especially in the presence of a life threatening illness; b) unexpected complications arise which are outside this level of competence; c) specialized treatment or procedures are contemplated with which they are not familiar;
22. Makes referrals as indicated by the assessed needs of the patient;
23. Participates in the on-call schedule;
24 Ensures that patient records are kept confidential consistent with the Health Center policies and procedures and HIPAA standards; monitors HIPAA compliance within the work environment;
25. Immediately reports any discovered or suspected fraud, waste, or abuse of health center funds to the Administrative Manager or Program Director;
26. Reviews policies for compliance with current practice; participates in review and determination of dental clinic scope of service;
27. Participates in the Health Center’s continuous quality improvement program and related staff meetings;
28. Immediately reports any discovered or suspected violations of HCC’s protected health information privacy or security policies and procedures to the Administrative Manager or Program Director;
29. Pursues a continuing program to maintain or enhance competency as a dentist; maintain high levels of current knowledge about new developments in dentistry; and
30. Other related job duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS, VISUAL ACUITY, AND WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION
1. The physical activity of this position includes:
1.1. Standing: Remaining upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time;
1.2. Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work area to another;
1.3. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist;
1.4. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees;
1.5. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine;
1.6. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction;
1.7. Fingering: Typing on a computer keyboard and cell phone;
1.8. Grasping: Applying pressure to a computer mouse and cell phone with the fingers, palm or whole hand;
1.9. Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers during examinations or inputting data into a computer;
1.10. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly;
1.11. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
2. The physical requirements of this position include sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The position involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
3. Close visual acuity to perform activities such as: Conducting physical examinations; entering data into a computer terminal; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
4. Environmental conditions for this position include:
4.1. Inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions and but possibly not from temperature changes.
4.2. Possible exposure to body fluids, infectious diseases, and hazardous chemicals.
4.3. Possible contact with people with impaired self-control related to psychiatric or intellectual disabilities and co-occurring substance abuse disorders.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
1. DDS or DMD degree and current licensure in New York State.
2. Current CPR certification;
3. Experience in the practice of dentistry with public health orientation through training, experience or professional interest preferred;
4. Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare, Medicaid and other insurance reimbursement programs;
5. Current DEA certification;
6. Demonstrate clinical excellence with compassion and care.
