Definition
Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Teacher Assistant supports the assigned Teacher in the care, development, and supervision of children within the designated classroom and age group. Classroom assignments may include Infant, Toddler, or Preschool and are dependent upon meeting the qualification requirements for a Teacher Assistant as outlined by the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing.
The Teacher Assistant plays an essential role in providing high-quality developmental support to each child, assisting in the implementation of daily, developmentally appropriate lesson plans, and supporting teaching strategies aligned with age-specific learning needs. This role also assists with designing, organizing, and maintaining safe, engaging learning environments. The Teacher Assistant ensures that classroom practices support the California Department of Education Early Learning Foundations and comply with the assigned Environmental Rating Scale, such as the Infant/Toddler Environmental Rating Scale (ITERS) or the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS).
Responsibilities
- Assist in observing and documenting the development of infants, toddlers, or preschoolaged children.
- Assist in supervising children and implementing daily program activities in accordance with Title 5, Title 22, and HBMPAA Preschool for the Arts policies, procedures, and philosophy.
- Record daily care and activities provided to each child in the My Day Log (e.g., meals, diapering, naps, and classroom activities).
- Provide support to the Teacher during parentteacher conferences, following DRDP 2015 timelines as needed.
- Assist in arranging, organizing, and maintaining the design, appearance, and safety of classroom learning environments.
- Ensure daily sanitation of classroom materials and equipment, including laundering bedding, washcloths, and bibs.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in Early Childhood Education (ECE).
- Must provide proof of enrollment in Child Growth and Development by the end of the first program year if not already completed.
- Bilingual proficiency may be required depending on child and family enrollment needs.
- Must be able to obtain a Child Development Assistant permit.
- Completion of 8 hours of Health and Safety training, mandated reporter training, CPR, and First Aid certification.
- Updated Health Screening Report and negative TB test results.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check (DOJ, FBI, and all required clearances).
