General Statement of Duties
Under the direction of the school principal and the dyslexia advisor, the special education reading teacher plans and provides for appropriate reading instruction for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for planning and delivering reading instruction in the areas of decoding, fluency, and comprehension to students with disabilities. This person will demonstrate strong knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices in the area of literacy. This person will also support students with disabilities in developing study skills and skills for using accommodations. Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level. This person will work with department members to support IEP development and compliance.
Essential Duties
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
Demonstrates accurate knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices, knowledge of the learning and behavioral characteristics of the disabilities of the students with whom they work, and understanding of functions of behavior and is knowledgeable of interventions matched to each. Experience with a variety of evidence-based instructional practices as well as data collection and its utilization. Knowledge of special education laws, policies and practices. Proficient with Microsoft and/or Google Suite and other related educational software.
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education. Reading Specialist endorsement or Orton-Gillingham training preferred.
Additional Information
The minimum salary for this 209-day position is $57,925 with a bachelor's degree or $60,706 with a master's. The annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date.
This position qualifies for a $3,500 Opportunity School Stipend.

Essential Duties
- Demonstrates strong knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices in the area of literacy
- Provides direct and indirect literacy instructional services to students in a positive environment.
- Instructs students in reading and writing using evidence-based strategies
- Instructs students in developing effective study skills
- Instructs students in efficient use of accommodations to support literacy needs, including access to read aloud and speech-to-text software
- Knowledgeable about the various reading programs provided by the school division to ensure appropriate instructional match based on individual student needs.
- Provides case management to students Provides leadership and expertise in the area of literacy for students with disabilities to other members of the faculty
- Establishes and enforces rules and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
- Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
- Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports on children and activities, as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
- Collects and analyzes reading data to inform educational decision-making
- Assists in the preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports.
- Supervises paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom
- Maintains professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
- Willing to provide professional learning for school faculty regarding students with disabilities and literacy needs and services
- Performs other duties as assigned and approved by the Director of Exceptional Education.
- Regular attendance is required.
