What are the responsibilities and job description for the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist position at Hiawatha Valley Education District?
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in recreational therapy
- Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist preferred, but not required
- Must have a valid driver’s license to travel between HVED programs
- Strong written and oral communication skills

- Current knowledge of best practices in Therapeutic Recreation

- Establish a trusting therapeutic relationship with the diverse students in the program

- Plan and implement safe and accessible recreation, artistic, instructional, and athletic activities on an independent, group, or team level
- Develop new programs and activities by researching trends, student and faculty recommendations, and evaluating student needs
- Observe monitor, and collect data to ensure the quality of programs, events, and classes.
- Order, inspect, and maintain recreation equipment and materials
- Maintain records and reports as required, including but not limited to required MA billing
- All other duties as assigned.

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist will plan and facilitate therapeutic recreational activities for students within HVED programs to enhance their educational experience.

Hiawatha Valley Education District provides special education services to 13 School Districts and 3 Charter Schools within five counties of southeast Minnesota: Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona. Hiawatha Valley Education District also has a Setting IV Behavior Program, located in Kellogg, MN that provides programming for grades K-12 students with challenging behaviors currently receiving special education services. Hiawatha Valley Education District provides programming for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder located in Hokah, MN. HVED offers an Alternative Learning Center housed in MN State College SE located in Winona, MN.
