Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the General Manager, the Aquatics Supervisor provides day-to-day administration of the Highlands Recreation District (HRD) pool and aquatics programs. The position supervises one full-time aquatics coordinator and multiple part-time staff including lifeguards, swim instructors, swim team coach, fitness instructors, contractors, and volunteers.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate the ability and competencies to lead others in order to achieve identified outcomes in creating an impact, strengthening our resources, and protecting the District.
  • Perform routine and proactive maintenance of the pool, including pump room, pool machinery, filters and pool chemicals.
  • Ensure satisfactory appearance and hygiene of the aquatic facilities including changing areas and the deck.
  • Increase staff capability and motivation through recruitment, training, development, leadership, evaluation and interactive feedback.
  • Ensure the aquatics department is correctly staffed at all times with both lifeguards and swim teachers.
  • Develop and monitor the budget to achieve financial goals.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely reports and correspondence as required.
  • Communicate proactively and efficiently with all stakeholders including management, employees, patrons, board members, community members, and peers. 
  • Maintain effective community relations and establish meaningful relationships with pool patrons. 
  • Attend all District special events and extra activities.
  • Promote and support aquatic facility rentals.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive marketing plan for aquatic programs.
  • Maintain a positive and safe environment for patrons and employees by following accepted aquatics best-practices.
  • Serve as Safety officer for the District.
  • Conduct long range planning and maintenance for pool facilities.
  • Teach swimming lessons and lifeguard as necessary
  • Evaluate community recreation needs and interests and adapt programming accordingly.
  • Schedule staff in accordance with programming and District needs. 
  • Ensure staff compliance with District policies and procedures.


Requirements

  

Essential Knowledge & Abilities

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of pool maintenance practices.
  • Must be familiar with the use and maintenance of pool pump rooms and equipment.[MC1] [JC2] 
  • Must be flexible and able to maintain a positive and supportive working relationship with staff, parents, volunteers, community members, and children.
  • Proven leadership and scheduling experience.
  • Must have the ability to develop and administer budgets and maintain fiscal records.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Have knowledge of American Red Cross courses such as Learn to Swim classes, Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor (or equivalent training).
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of CAL OSHA regulations and record keeping practices.
  • Ability to organize tasks, establish systems, and delegate work and responsibility to others. 
  • Ability to solve problems and take action as needed. 
  • Ability to instill trust and respect from staff, children, and parents.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in      aquatics, including supervisory experience.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation related field preferred.

Additional Requirements

· Must possess and maintain a valid CA Driver’s license.

· Current or former American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification(or equivalent).

· Receive Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.

· Current or ability to attain certification CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer within 6 months of hire.

· Current or ability to attain current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification within 6 months of hire.

· Current or former CPO or AFO certification and ability to recertify within 6 months of hire.

Physical Demands

Visual and auditory ability to observe and respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation. Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills and the ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull and lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.

Environmental Conditions

Outdoor swimming pool environment; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, cold, sun, and inclement weather conditions; work around wet and/or slippery surfaces; car travel; ability to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing essential functions; tolerate exposure to water and sunlight for prolonged periods of time. Ability to tolerate high levels of noise or distraction.
