Job Summary
SD Industries is seeking a reliable and motivated Shop Helper to assist in our busy manufacturing and fabrication operations. In this entry-level role, you will support skilled fabricators, welders, and machine operators by performing general shop tasks, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, handling materials, and helping ensure smooth daily production of high-quality metal products (such as precision components, signage, architectural metalwork, stainless steel equipment, or custom fabrications).
This is an excellent opportunity to learn hands-on skills in a modern manufacturing setting using advanced machinery, with potential for growth into more specialized roles like machine operation, welding, or assembly.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist fabricators and operators with material preparation, including loading/unloading raw materials (e.g., sheet metal, stainless steel, tubing, glass components).
- Handle basic material movement using forklifts (if certified), pallet jacks, overhead cranes, or manual lifting (following safe lifting practices).
- Clean and organize the shop floor, workstations, tools, and equipment to maintain a safe, efficient, and 5S-compliant environment.
- Support production by fetching tools, supplies, or parts as needed; prepare parts for welding, cutting, bending, or assembly.
- Perform simple finishing tasks such as deburring, grinding, sanding, cleaning parts, or applying basic labels/identification.
- Help with inventory tasks, including counting stock, restocking shelves, and reporting low supplies.
- Assist in packaging, skidding, or preparing finished products for shipment.
- Maintain shop cleanliness by sweeping, removing scrap metal/debris, emptying trash, and disposing of waste properly (including recycling where applicable).
- Follow all company safety protocols, wear required PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection), and report any hazards immediately.
- Participate in team efforts to meet daily/weekly production goals and quality standards.
- Perform other general labor duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred (or equivalent experience).
- No prior experience required – we provide on-the-job training; previous shop, warehouse, construction, or general labor experience is a plus.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Basic understanding of shop safety practices and willingness to learn.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain one is a plus.
- Comfortable working around loud machinery, welding, cutting, and industrial equipment.
- Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods and work in varying temperatures (shop environment).
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Familiarity with basic hand tools, power tools, tape measures, or grinders.
- Experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, or related fields.
- Positive attitude and eagerness to learn new skills (e.g., basic welding, CNC operation, or machine setup).
