Position Overview

The Resource Development Director at HL7 International plays a pivotal role in securing the resources necessary to advance global healthcare interoperability and standards adoption.This position is responsible for developing and implementing revenue growth strategies, expanding the membership base, and securing grants and contracts.Success will be measured through annual revenue targets, an increase in membership, and the identification of new high-impact funding sources. The Resource Development Director works closely with the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors to align fundraising and resource development strategies with organizational goals, ensuring long-term financial sustainability and growth.

Key Responsibilities

Resource Development & Fundraising Strategy

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive revenue growth strategy aligned with HL7s mission and financial goals, with measurable annual fundraising targets.
  • Identify, research, and pursue funding opportunities from foundations, government entities, non-governmental organizations, and other sources.
  • Lead the proposal development process, including writing and submitting high-quality proposals and grant applications.
  • Explore and implement innovative revenue streams, including partnerships, sponsorships, digital fundraising campaigns, and virtual events.
  • Plan and execute major fundraising initiatives annually, including opportunities such as galas, auctions, and community outreach activities.
  • Oversee the creation of fundraising materials, including brochures, newsletters, social media content, and data-driven impact reports.
  • Coordinate with and leverage opportunities with the HL7 FHIR Foundation, a 501c3 supporting organization on behalf of HL7 International.

Donor & Member Relations

  • Identify and cultivate relationships with potential corporate members, government agencies, healthcare providers, and industry partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key funders, donors, and partners to enhance HL7s funding opportunities, with a focus on international engagement.
  • Represent HL7 at meetings and conferences to promote the organization and cultivate new funding relationships, including with global health organizations and affiliates.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to align funding proposals with HL7s programmatic goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop engagement strategies to increase corporate membership by a targeted percentage annually.
  • Grant & Contract Management

  • Secure grants from foundations, government agencies, and other funding sources, with a focus on aligning with HL7s international healthcare data standardization efforts.
  • Research and identify grant opportunities, prepare and submit grant proposals, and manage grant reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage the process for seeking and securing government contracts and cooperative agreements.
  • Advocate for HL7s mission with government agencies and policymakers to secure grants and cooperative agreements that align with healthcare interoperability efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with all grant and contract requirements, including timely reporting and communication with funding agencies.
  • Budgeting, Monitoring & Reporting

  • Develop and manage the development departments budget, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Monitor and report on revenue performance, providing data-driven insights and recommendations for improvement.
  • Leverage donor analytics and fundraising data to optimize engagement and funding strategies.
  • Leadership

  • Supervise and support development staff and volunteers, providing guidance and professional development opportunities.
  • Work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and key program leaders to align the resource development strategy with HL7s strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with HL7s marketing, communications, and community management teams to coordinate outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Resource Development Capabilities

  • Create and standardize development approaches, processes, and systems.
  • Use Salesforce / Fonteva to develop an electronic system to track opportunities, contractors, partners, and agencies.
  • Build a library of templates and boilerplates for funding applications : proposal and organizational language, federal and international financial and organizational identification, staff bios, and rates.
  • Mentor and coach HL7 staff to strengthen their resource development knowledge, skills, and networks.
  • Communicate to the HL7 community the process for workgroups, accelerators, members, and others to list or request support for opportunities HL7 may not already be tracking.
  • Qualifications and Required Skills Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Business, Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience of successful fundraising, grant writing, or resource development experience, preferably in the healthcare or non-profit sector.
  • Proven success in securing significant funding from foundations, government agencies, and corporate partnerships.
  • Skills & Attributes

  • Familiarity with the healthcare industry[CJ6], health informatics, or data standards is required.
  • Proven ability to secure significant funding from different sources.
  • Expertise in grant proposal development and the ability to write clear, compelling proposals.
  • Expertise in fundraising campaign management.
  • Excellent networking and relationship-building skills with funders and partners.
  • Ability to analyze data to drive decisions and improve fundraising outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with fundraising databases and financial reporting systems.
  • High level of integrity, creativity, and a passion for HL7s mission.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
