What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Community Standards position at Hofstra University?
Reporting to the Dean of Students/Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, the Director of Community Standards provides vision, leadership, and daily administration for the University’s community standards system that serves all undergraduate and graduate students at Hofstra. The Director of Community Standards provides administrative and policy oversight for the University’s community standards process, and its hearing boards; leadership development for the department’s educational support services and training initiatives; supervision of the Community Standards Senior Program Coordinator; and maintenance, tracking, and retrieval of all student community standards records. In addition, the Director of Community Standards is a member of the Dean of Students leadership team and assists with various area projects, committees, and initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) and the University. Specific areas of focus and responsibility include:
- Oversee and direct all aspects of student community standards.
- Develop and update all community standards policies and procedures and consult with other University constituencies (e.g., Public Safety, Title IX Coordinator for Student Issues, General Counsel, Vice President for Student Affairs, etc.) to ensure compliance with governmental laws/regulations.
- Directly manage all high-level community standards cases, including incidents involving Title IX and Prohibited Bias and Discriminatory Harassment matters, and all associated sanctioning.
- Coordinate information about the student community standards process with regard to student organization and group activities, including statistical reports and annual revisions to the Code of Student Conduct/Community Standards with the Office of General Counsel (the Guide to Pride student handbook).
- Develop a student community standards program that prescribes and practices ethical behavior among all community members and embrace the University’s P.R.I.D.E Values.
- Develop departmental strategic planning initiatives and assess all departmental efforts to determine effectiveness.
- Supervise the Senior Program Coordinator and oversee all aspects of the student and administrative boards.
- Coordinate with Residence Life regarding policies and processes and direct/advise all Resident Directors in their roles as Community Standards Hearing Officers.
- Develop and administer systems to maintain and track community standards records.
- Develop and maintain the integrity of the community standards database system (Maxient) and lead all community standards tracking and assessment efforts.
- Respond to authorized requests for documentation regarding community standards histories.
- Work with the Dean of Students/AVP to manage and approve Dean’s Certifications, transfer/employment applications and other documents requiring community standards record verification.
- Manage administrative aspects within the community standards system (i.e., Maxient database updates, and sanction compliance., etc.)
- Oversee all community standards hearing officers and serve as a resource regarding Maxient database entry, paperwork requirements, scheduling issues, policy changes, procedural updates, etc.
- Work in collaboration with all departments in the DSA, colleagues across the University, and members of the local community to establish a student-centered community standards program which supports the mission of Hofstra University.
- Consult and coordinate with University constituencies to develop and promote and maintain an educational and holistic approach to the community standards process.
- Create and implement on-going training to all those with supporting roles within the community standards system: Administrative Hearing Board members, Title IX Administrative Hearing Board members, Student Community Standards Board members, Community Standards Hearing Officers, , Resident Assistants, etc.
- Provide conduct related presentations and workshops to other University departments. Design and oversee the implementation of all departmental educational initiatives. Recruit, train and schedule administrative volunteers to facilitate educational workshops and seminars.
- Manage/oversee the publication of all information related to community standards and the conduct process.
- Communicate with all University departments to implement the annual update of the student handbook (Guide to Pride).
- Review, recommend and update the Code of Community Standards for students and organizations as well as other related policies.
- Design and maintain the accuracy of the community standards website. Maintain a working knowledge of current government regulations and student affairs best practices as they pertain to student community standards and higher education (i.e., Title IX, Clery Act, and FERPA).
- Serve on DSA and University committees and perform other similar duties as assigned.
