Director of Afterschool & Recreation
Homes for the Homeless, Inc., is actively seeking a Director of Afterschool & Recreation, for a new facility opening in Hell's Kitchen that will house families with children experiencing homelessness. The Director will be assigned to manage the day-to-day operations of an after-school site in order to ensure that quality standards and guidelines are met and that the program is meeting all contract requirements. The Director will have overall accountability for the growth, quality and success of the program operation, its students, and its staff. The Director must be a positive role model and a natural leader with excellent communication skills.

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family. undefined
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Program development, including curriculum, staffing, and operational aspects, of afterschool programs.
- Accountable for ensuring that the program maintains an emotionally and physically safe environment for youth and that meets all compliance and safety requirements set forth by the organization, funders and applicable laws.
- Establishes a combination of program activities to provide academic tutoring and support, skill-driven sports, fitness and wellness activities, and arts instruction.
- Organizes special and culminating events, including showcases that highlight student achievement and culturally enriching field trips.
- Responsible for the implementation of innovative and age-appropriate curriculums, enrichment activities, and theme-based projects.
- Creates and distributes schedule of all activities and ensures appropriate record keeping and reporting of all youth attendance and related data.
- Facilitates parent orientations, encouraging parental involvement and fostering strong relationships with parents.
- Responsible for recruitment and supervision of participants.
- Responsible for recruitment and supervision of dedicated staff that meet the highest standards of qualifications in being able to carry out goals of the after-school program.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in related fields (education, psychology, social work, recreation or physical education with supervisory experience and experience coordinating afterschool or recreation programs).
- Teaching and after school management experience preferred.
- Experience working with low-income and at-risk youth.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
