Job Title: Residential Counselor II

Classification: Non-Exempt, PRN

Reports to: Residential Counselor Supervisor

Job Schedule: Multiple Schedules: Days, Evenings, Overnights and Weekends

Summary: The Residential Counselor II provides trauma-informed supervision for youth admitted to the shelter ensuring their health and safety at all times. Residential Counselor II is expected to facilitate psycho-educational groups to support the social and emotional adjustment of the youth in the program. Residential Counselor II also supports the activities of daily living for assigned youth.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, human services or related field. A bachelor’s degree in non-human service-related field must have at least 2 years’ experience.

· Experience with trauma informed care, childhood mental health disorders and knowledge of developmental milestones specific to adolescents.

· Experience and commitment to servicing children, youth and their families in a variety of settings, with varying backgrounds and living situations.

· Effective verbal and written communication skills, Computer proficiency required.

· Acceptable Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Clearance, Criminal Investigation Report and health assessment with TB screening. Valid driver’s license required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the daily care and supervision of residents (adolescent youth or children) living in the shelter.
  • Maintain consistency and continuity of care of residents by adhering to established daily schedule of activities.
  • Assist in the upkeep of the shelter by wiping down tables, sweeping floors and modeling appropriate cleaning techniques for youth.
  • Assist residents with adjustment to group living, out of home placement.
  • Assist each resident to deal with their behavior and feelings related to the milieu and daily living experiences.
  • Assist each resident to develop appropriate behavioral responses to situations in the group home and community settings i.e. school.
  • Assist with new employee orientation, model for colleagues as a senior staff member.
  • Assume shift-lead in absence of supervisor on shift.
  • Assist in crisis situations, using verbal de-escalation and milieu management techniques.
  • Plan and facilitate psycho-educational groups with Residential Counselor I staff.
  • Plan and facilitate recreational, cultural and educational activities for the group, gaining approval from the Director.
  • Participate in the creation of a curriculum of group lessons that can be used on all shifts.
  • Responsible for participating in the operation of the facility with coworkers on assigned shifts to include resident activities, monitoring resident visitors, resident bedtime protocols, medication administration, meals and chores.
  • Responsible for completing DAP notes on each assigned resident for the shift. This is a specific format progress note on each youth.
  • Responsible for completing written documentation as requested according to agency policies such as progress notes, consultation logs, shift reports, incident reports.
  • Attend and participate in appropriate agency meetings, treatment planning conferences, in-service training and staff development, as directed by supervisor.
  • Complete certification courses and administer medication to youth who need it.
  • Communication and collaboration with program and agency leadership.
  • Communication and collaboration with community agency personnel i.e. DHS personnel, Police, EMT’s, Crisis Workers etc.
  • Ensure compliance with PA Ch.55 3800 regulations for operating a Children Residential Facility.
  • Prepare and engage in weekly supervision with designated supervisor on shift.

Work Environment:

This position is on-call and on-site. Occasional travel to HopePHL offices or off-site locations will be required. The candidate for this position will routinely use computers, photocopiers, filing cabinets and other standard office equipment. This position also requires you assist with large gift in-kind drives and occasional event set up and breakdown.
