Position Summary:
The staff hemodialysis Licensed Practical Nurse is proficient in providing hemodialysis therapies to patient with Chronic Renal Failure. The L.P.N. works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, Medical Director and patient’s physician. The L.P.N. hemodialysis nurse must possess the physical capabilities to successfully perform the job as stated in the physical requirements. Adherence to all policies and procedures is required.
Essential Functions:
- Machine maintenance, safety, and care
- Prepares machines for hemodialysis treatments
- Troubleshoots machine alarms as appropriate
- Safely operate all dialysis-related equipment
- Reports machine problems to mechanical technician
- Removes disposables and cleans station after each treatment
- Be familiar with all emergency equipment and all emergency operational procedures
- Performs duties to assist with the care of the patient.
- Takes vitals and obtains weights of the patients.
- Completes pretreatment and post treatment physicals, and mental assessments.
- Prepares supplies for hemodialysis.
- Initiates safely and terminates dialysis treatments per facility protocol.
- Monitors patients during dialysis treatments.
- Assists with changeover.
- Gathers patient data and observation to report to the registered nurse.
- Mixes acids and bicarbonate according to protocol.
- Report any significant information or change in patient condition to the Charge Nurse.
- Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment.
- Reinforce teaching to patients.
- Assists physicians during patient rounds.
- Administers medications to patients.
- Transcribes and implements physician orders.
- Assist in patient care-plan meetings when appropriate.
- Packages medical waste per facility protocol.
- Disinfect bicarbonate containers hemostats and patient clamps as directed by facility protocol.
- Stocks hemodialysis carts.
- Fills bicarb jugs from mixer if applicable.
- Fills acid jugs from mixer.
- Performs other patient care assigned by Charge Nurse.
- Responsible for reporting all incidents, information, complaints, or problems to the Nurse Manager.
- Participate in continuous Quality Improvement activities.
- Participates in gathering data for comparative and trending; to help identify opportunities for improvement.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
- Cross train to peritoneal dialysis.
- Cross train to inpatient hemodialysis.
The responsibilities listed above are not all-inclusive; other activities may be required in support of the hospital’s goals and objectives.
Position Requirements:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current nursing license in state of Illinois.
- One or more years of current nursing experience preferred.
- BLS Certification.
- ACLS Certification preferred

Hours: 3 12hr shifts per week, rotating schedule Monday- Saturday
