ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Founded in 1971, the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) is a national nonprofit and a certified community development financial institution dedicated to helping local rural organizations build affordable homes by providing below-market financing, technical assistance, training, research, and information services. HAC’s mission is to improve housing conditions for the rural poor, with an emphasis on the poorest of the poor in the most rural places, particularly regions and populations with high needs: Native American communities, the Mississippi Delta, farmworkers, the southwest border colonias, and Appalachia.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Research Associate conducts research, analyzes, and manages data, and disseminates information that informs local strategies and national policies to improve conditions for rural people.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

  1. Researches and prepares, either independently or as part of a project team, research reports and other information products and publications.
  2. Prepares written materials, including analysis of social, economic, and housing conditions; review of federal regulations and policies; newsletters; online content and other materials that are clear, compelling and help inform a general audience understand impacts on rural places and people.
  3. Represents HAC at meetings, coalitions, other organizations, federal departments, and agencies on issues and policy-related matters.
  4. Make and/or prepare presentations, with pertinent research and data, at symposiums, conferences, workshops, and seminars.
  5. Presents information about research and policy to small and large groups in person, by webinars or other electronic means, and in response to media inquiries.
  6. Helps in the development of rural housing research and policy recommendations, helps drafts comments on regulations.
  7. Help conceptualize research, training, and policy efforts.
  8. Comments on peers' work.
  9. Performs other duties as necessitated as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certain education, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position are required. Other abilities and experience are preferred.

Required

  1. Bachelor’s degree and/or relevant professional experience.
  2. Experience in computer-assisted social science research, including knowledge of statistical methods and the use of databases and spreadsheets.
  3. Excellent organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to social justice issues.
  5. Interest in rural issues.
  6. Proven ability to work independently, and as part of a team.

Preferred

  1. Graduate degree and/or relevant professional experience.
  2. Experience and proficiency with quantitative data methods and data analysis.
  3. Experience with housing issues and resources as they relate to rural and low-income populations.
  4. Professional work experience in housing and/or community development, research, or policy.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position operates in a professional office environment. Travel may be required. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

HAC offers competitive wages, benefits, and growth opportunities consistent with industry standards. Flexible benefits packages include health insurance; life and other insurance; financial benefits, to include a retirement plan with partial employer match; time off; and work/life benefits, to include education assistance. The salary range is $61,000 to $66,000 per year, depending on qualifications.
