General Responsibilities
The Disability Support Services Counselor’s function is to assist in ensuring programmatic and physical accessibility for students with disabilities. This position works closely with students to provide academic advising and determine reasonable accommodations based on their disability documentation. The counselor also works closely with faculty and staff in providing these accommodations and ensuring accessibility. The counselor must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment as the DSS Office serves over 800 students with disabilities each semester. The Disability Support Services Counselor’s function is to assist in ensuring programmatic and physical accessibility for students with disabilities.
Work Performed
Meet with students both in-person and via Zoom to establish reasonable accommodations and provide academic advising.
Review documentation of disability to ensure eligibility for services.
Work with fellow DSS counselors to advance HCC’s mission to make programs and services accessible for students with disabilities.
Oversee a caseload of DSS students and perform outreach and intervention to promote student success.
Communicate across campus to inform on the mission of DSS and to support students in the DSS cohort.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Required
Minimum Number of Years Experience Required
Other Knowledge Required
Master’s degree in Counseling, Special Education, or related field
Demonstrated knowledge of laws protecting persons with disabilities such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
Experience providing advocacy and counseling to persons with disabilities, preferably at the college level
Knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills
Ability to work well within a team environment
Regular attendance is a requirement of this job
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
College advising experience preferred
Experience assessing student documentation of disability and prescribing accommodations at the college level is preferred but not necessary

Experience with online student information systems such as Ellucian, AIM, CRM-Advise, etc… is preferred
