What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tooling Specialist IV position at Howmet Aerospace?

This position requires an in depth knowledge of operating methods and techniques to make set-ups and maintain close tolerances and finish requirements. Must have process knowledge of machining fundamentals and shop mathematics. Work requires decisions using ingenuity, initiative, and sound judgment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and determine setup procedure and operating sequence, select tooling, attachments, spindle speeds, federates, and work piece securing methods for operations such as bore, mill, drill, face, thread, and turn.
  • Familiarity with EDM (wire and sinker), thread rolling, OD and ID grinding, and manual lathes and mills.
  • Align and secure fixtures for clamping work piece or locate, support, and clamp work piece in absence of holding fixtures. Set stops, calibrate fixture or work piece to machine reference point.
  • Install part program into CNC control and correlate machine position with control. Cycle machine through operation sequence and adjust machine to correct deviations from program specifications. Recognize variations in program and operational sequences, tool settings, dimensional and finish deviations and make corrective adjustments.
  • Operate machine to perform progressive machining operations on repetitive work to close and exacting tolerances and finish specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, part drawings, job layouts and specifications.
  • Use a wide variety of precision measuring instruments and devices to setup machine, operate machine, and check work.
  • Computer knowledge of MS office programs (i.e. Word and Excel), MasterCAM, and SolidWorks.
  • Parts to be lifted and/or transported may weigh up to 30 lbs.
  • Keeps work area clean (and equipment), safe and in an orderly fashion on a daily basis.
  • Fabricate and assemble all tooling pertaining to machine tooling prints and or production prints.
  • Must be able to set up/operate all tool room type machinery. Diagnose causes of malfunctions in machines, equipment, and related mechanisms. Identify, broken, worn or otherwise defective parts, assembly, tooling, and fixtures, and determine whether they can and/or should be repaired, rebuilt, or replaced.
  • Describe materials, configurations, dimensions, specifications, and/or procedures required for fabricating and/or machining and/or treat heating , tools and fixtures needed to complete machine set-up for production by making sketches or shop drawings.
  • Determine whether parts, tooling, and fixtures can or should be repaired, rebuilt, or fabricated in-house, or whether services or items should be obtained from outside sources.
  • Request materials, tooling, and equipment as needed.
  • Performs other tasks of equal or lesser skill as required.

  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.
  • Education and/or Experience - High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred; and five years of experience in set up operation of all machine shop equipment including but not limited to Manual and CNC lathes, mills, EDM, grinders, etc. Or equivalent previous experience with a fastener manufacturing company. Ability to trouble-shoot and solve problems of the most advanced level. Must possess a working knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys.
