Overview

The Controller is responsible for planning and directing all aspects of the operational accounting functions and manages the accumulation and consolidation of financial data necessary for accurate reporting of HSSV results. This individual will operate with a proactive, collaborative approach to anticipate organizational and project needs. The Controller will provide leadership to employees involved in the accounting process, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, inventory and compliance.


Duties and Responsibilities


Leadership

  • Manage a high performing team and spearhead team building, employee relations, communications, performance management and goal setting. Forecast hiring plans and drive hiring decisions for the team.
  • Partner with department managers to interpret their financial data to assist in their decisions on the financial health of the organization.
  • Partner with VP, Finance in navigating HSSV towards achievement of the organization’s strategic financial initiatives.
  • Drive process improvements and leverage technology whenever possible while ensuring financial control systems are not compromised.
  • Establish financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems.


Financial Statements

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop processes to ensure that entries to the general ledger are booked correctly and properly reflected on the financial statements and performs account reconciliations as required.
  • Drive process for timely and accurate reconciliations of accounts in addition to the required supporting documentation, as necessary, to ensure timely monthly close within 7 business days of month end.
  • Develop internal and external financial reports including monthly and year-to-date revenue and expense statements for department managers and the Board (along with Finance and Audit Committees) and other monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
  • Manage all audit and tax preparation and interface with external auditors for audit and tax compliance.


Budget Management

  • Assist the VP, Finance with the preparation of the budget on an annual basis and during the year as needed.
  • Ensure budget to actual reports are available to budget owners on a timely basis.
  • Collaborate with departments on budget management.
  • Achieve budget objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective actions.


Asset and Liability Management

  • Manage banking relationships and liquid assets of the organization.
  • Protect assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.
  • Develop effective purchasing and materials management procedures and controls.
  • Lead the payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.


Fundraising

  • Ensure that cash and non-cash donations are properly accounted for on a timely basis and are reconciled monthly with donations recorded by the Revenue team.
  • Identify, in collaboration with the Development team, new methods of fundraising and revenue generation.


Other Areas

  • Keep abreast on current federal, state and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation and applying it directly to HSSV’s Finance department, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Prepare special reports, as needed.
  • Ensure financial information is kept confidential; shared only with those authorized to receive the information.
  • Other job duties may be assigned as needed.


Requirements


  • Successful people and financial/accounting management experience working in a highly collaborative environment with cross-functional management teams. Nonprofit experience a plus.
  • CPA license highly preferred.
  • Ability to operate at a strategic and operational level with a demonstrated ability to drive results.
  • Excellent organization skills including attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in working with accounting and finance data.
  • Ability to leverage technology to drive process changes and change management.
  • Effective problem-solving, process improvement and decision-making abilities.
  • Willingness and ability to quickly adapt, be self-motivated and adjust to the changing needs of the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to a diverse range of audiences and settings.
  • Computer skills including spreadsheets and experience with financial and accounting software systems; NetSuite, Concur and Pivot a plus.


Work Days and Hours
Hours are flexible and based on organizational need. Hours may include days or evening hours, weekdays or weekends, depending on staffing needs.
