Job Description for Critical Care NP (CCNP)

Critical Care Nurse Practitioner is a member of the intensive care team and has as his/her primary responsibility the management of critically ill complex (multi-organ) patients in an intensive care setting. The CCNP is under the direct supervision of the ICU supervising physician or designated back-up physicians. The CCNP has specialized skill and knowledge related to the unique ICU setting in which s/he practices and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services in a ICU or step-down unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct clinical services for critically ill adult patients with multi-system failure, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the ICU supervising physician.
  • Shifts are 8 hours (11:00AM-7:00PM) with 1 weekend required per month.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, patient's family, staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient's clinical status. 
  • Formulate and implement treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated primary supervising physician and/or attending back-up physician(s). Document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries. 
  • Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions. Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
  • Provide family-centered care by communicating with the family regarding the changing health care needs of their family member in consultation with the supervising Intensivist.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Identify educational needs of the family and participate in teaching opportunities.
  • Assess educational needs, plan, provide, and evaluate educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary healthcare team, and community. Precept new nurse practitioners, other advanced practice nurses, and healthcare learners.
  • Respond and assist in running RRT and Code blue on the floors/ICU/Peri-operative areas along with the code team.

Position Highlights

  • Full-time
  • 8-hour shifts; 11am-7pm with 1 weekend required
  • Approximately 6-8 patient encounters per day 
  • Intensivist on-site for 4 hours and then on-call availability
  • Sub-specialty support available onsite

Requirements

  • Perform and participate in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical improvement.
  • Serve as a clinical expert and leadership consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team and to the medical staff.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Education

Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Critical Care / Acute Care NP Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post-master's program strongly preferred.

  • Experience

At least 3 Year of Experience in an ICU setting as an NP strongly preferred.

 

  • Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

            Must have current RN licensure in the state of New Jersey.  BLS required.
