The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse, responsible for producing optimal practice outcomes, promoting quality patient care and enhancing professional practice. The CNS assesses patient needs in the following risk domains: Resiliency, Vulnerability, Stability, Complexity, Resource Availability, Participation in Care, Participation in Decision-Making and Predictability of Condition/Outcome. The CNS demonstrates expertise in terms of eight nursing practice characteristics: Clinical Judgment, Clinical Inquiry (or Innovator/Evaluator), Facilitator of Learning, Collaboration, Systems Thinking, Advocacy and Moral Agency, Caring Practices and Response to Diversity. The CNS facilitates interprofessional collaboration in improving patient outcomes. The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Adult will have a primary focus on activities in the Medical Surgical, Geriatric, Telemetry, Critical Care, and/or Outpatient/Procedural care areas. This position may require flexibility of hours.

Education:
MSN required. Diploma or transcripts on highest degree earned required.

Experience/Training:
A minimum of three years of work experience as a registered nurse with adult medical-surgical, telemetry, geriatric and/or critical care patient care area/population, required.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current active unrestricted RN license issued by State of California required.
Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS provider required.
California CNS certification required.
Certification in specialty area, preferred.

ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
For Adult Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Critical Care and Gerontology:
1) Clinical Judgment
a. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge base and expertise in assessment and clinical skills by:
• Directing clinical nursing practice involving the adult/geriatric patient
• Implements evidence-based or “best practice” guidelines for specific patient population
• Provides consultation with nursing staff on complex patient issues
2) Facilitator of Learning
a. Coordination and assessment of educational development and clinical competency of the nursing staff
• Ensuring continued competency through educational programs for the newly hired, newly transferred and experienced nursing staff
b. Provides oversight of comprehensive patient education activities
3) Collaboration
a. Develops and oversees implementation of departmental specific Policies & Procedures and Power Plans in partnership with nursing leadership, Medical Directors and interprofessional team stakeholders.
b. Assists in identifying performance and outcomes measures by collecting, reviewing and analyzing data. After completion of the data collection, implementing changes related to patient care.
c. Partners with Nursing Research on all research activities related to the adult/geriatric population
